Question Academy House Brand (Monarch)

Academy Sports was having an all week black Friday sale, in store and online. Instead of battling all of the lines and people in the store, I went online to buy some ammo. EVERYTHING online was FREE SHIPPING, no minimum. I decided I would try the house brand, Monarch FMJ brass 115 gr & 124 gr for $9.99 a box of 50. Also, I bought some Monarch JHP brass 115 gr & 124 gr for $15.99 a box of 50. I bought (4) boxes of each.
From what I have heard, PPU makes this ammo. The casings are stamped with PPU as well. Has anyone used this ammo before? Opinions, please?

The house brand has many manufacturers. Academy shops around. They used to be Wolf steel case, Fiocchi brass, probably something else, now it's PPU. It's simply outsourced to whomever can provide the cheapest bulk. That's all

I shoot PPU often. No problems. It's not the cheapest when sold under its own brand but it goes on sale from time to time. Typically it's around $11/box

PPU = Prvi Partizan of Uzice Serbia. Good plinking ammo. I believe the steel cased pistol ammo is made by Barnaul of Russia.

I bought some Monarch 9mm several years ago from Academy. I fired it in my Glock and had no problems.

The jhp with PPU headstand will not expand under most conditions and basically performs as fmj

Yep! Assume it's just fmj.

Out here, Sportsman's Warehouse had Remington ammo on their black Friday deals. 9 mil 115 grain was $10.99 with a $5 mail-in rebate. I didn't even know it until I stopped there in the afternoon and there was an employee still stocking the shelves. They had a limit of 40 boxes per customer. 10 cents/round after rebate is as good as it gets.

Exclamation

My son and I shot (2) boxes of the FMJ and (2) boxes of the JHP's in our new Glocks. We didn't have any problems at all. I did shoot a few JHP's into some water logged phone books and they sort of "semi expanded." I will not be buying anymore of that "OVERPRICED" FMJ ammo!

I didn't buy any Monarch in store Fiday at 5AM but I did buy quite a few boxes of Remington UMC 147gr RNFMJ for $10.99.

I signed up for their credit card and got $25 off my purchase at the register.I had a $50 gift card from a 15-22 purchase 2 weeks ago that also lowered the register tally.

By 6AM all the Remington UMC 9mm was gone but plenty of 380 and 40cal left on the self

I'll send in the $5.00 a box rebate claim form tomorrow.

I've got zero experience with this ammo. But ... last week at my local indoor range, they checked our ammo before allowing us to shoot. They will not allow Monarch ammo because some of it, at least, now has a steel core as opposed to lead in the bullets. The ammo is doing bad things to the back stop of the range and is also bouncing around all over the indoor range. So I'd say to make sure about the ammo you bought. I suspect it will still fire and may be good practice ammo for all I know, but it might be better restricted to an outdoor range with a dirt backstop. This is just for whatever it might be worth!

Steel weighs less than 70% of lead so I can't see it replacing lead in the heavy grain rounds unless they're changing the dimensions of the bullet. Take a magnet with you when you buy ammo and check the bullet. Seems odd that would even be a consideration since it would increase production costs too.

Anyone who tells you that the steel cased Russian made Monarch ammo has steel cored bullets, they are completely ignorant of what they are talking about. 99% of all 9mm Luger and 9x18mm Makarov ammo imported from Russia use a bimetal bullet jacket, more specifically it is called gilding metal clad steel jacket. It is a soft steel jacket plated with copper, zinc or brass.

Steel cored handgun ammo is prohibited from being imported into the U.S. as armor piercing ammo. If someone truly does gets some real Russian made 9mm AP ammo mixed in with the regular FMJ ammo by mistake, they'll notice it right away as it does not look anything like a standard round nosed FMJ profile bullet.

I have bought it and shot several hundred rounds of it (in the brass casing) shot both 115gr fmj and 124gr jhp I think I bought it on sale a while back for $10.99 a box so at $9.99 even better, I like it never had any problems with it..

I thought I read or saw where PPU is now made in the USA.

A lot of ammo is made by the top ammo company's and just boxed
under a different name, to add to sales.

Sort of like the cereal company that started with one or two types.

I have yet to have any problems with 38, 357 and 9mm
"Second, third or forth" named new ammo form any of the company's,
made in the USA.
