M1 Garand
So ... my friend who served 40 years in the Marines decided to sell his M1 Garand. Lord knows I don't need an M1 Garand, but it's mine now!

Yep, everyone needs a Garand! Or two, or three, or four.......
Be careful, as with most addictions, it always starts somewhere.

I let a friend shoot one of mine at a range many years ago, he couldn’t believe how accurate the gun was.
I know a young fella, in the group I deer hunt with, who uses one. A bit heavy for me to tote through the woods, but I wouldn’t feel disadvantaged otherwise.

I remember my first Garand (ROTC 1959). First one I owned and the 2nd and the third and the 4th. I now own 18. The oldest is a May 1938. Ser # 1535. it still shoots 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards if you do your job.

M1 Garand
I thought I had stopped at 3 .... no such luck. Including one I built at CMP Armorers Class .... But Austin has me WAY beat! And they all shoot great. Wish I had doubled my orders for CMP Greek ammo.

You're right, you don't need an M1! They tend to breed a bit. Picking another one up as a wedding gift for my brother, and I'm fighting pretty hard to not toss another M1 in for myself when I put in the papers.
I lucked into a couple deals, one in 2012 or so, another in 2015, where I was able to buy about as much M2 ball as I could at an average of $.30/rd. I shoot my M1 a fair bit, and I'm down to my last few cans which really makes me nervous. A range day without a Garand really isn't a range day I care to be a part of.

M1 Garand vs. a Com-Bloc M44 Nagant.
Nice Korean War match-up there.

Nice rifle. I only own one now, have a friend that has 28 of them. He and I made a pilgrimage every year to the CMP North Store for quite a few years. Great place to visit if in the area.

That is a really nice example there, NukeRef.
I was up to six at one point. Down to one at the moment, but I do have receivers and parts kits enough to build three more in the future. The one I kept was put together by me from a stripped CMP Winchester receiver and parts from ebay and Gunbroker.

Years ago, I had DGR (Deans Gun Restoration) redo a 1944 Springfield. All parts were reparked and a new Wenig (I hate those ugly Boyds stocks) stock finished like a WW2 original finish. Sadly Dean died awhile back but his wife and staff continues to make really nice guns.

@NukeRef,
Don't you know the protocol?
You can't post about a Garand acquisition without giving us the details: Make? SN Range? Year? TE? etc.

Details? Hmmm ... I gave him money, he handed me one of his M1's.
Springfield Armory 30M1
S/N 214****
November 1943 per S/N lookup.
Bought from CMP c.1995;
Refurb'ed by James River Armory 2/2012;
Criterion Barrel.
The last time I touched an M1 was 1967. I am so looking forward to taking this one to the range in the near future. IF there's a barn downrange, I might hit it broadside ... !!

Speaking as a professionally (my wife) diagnosed victim of Garandits I will say you are going to have a blast with that rifle! One of my Grands is a CMP Special with a Criterion barrel, it is my match rifle and it shoots much, much better than I do .
Not to hijack your thread, but it is timely. I have my first H&R M1 from a CMP forum member winding it's way through the USPS system to my LGS as we speak.

Not only am I a self-admitted victim of Garanditis, but I am also an enabler. I acquired my M-1 many years ago from DCM. Normally I hadn't bought any semiautomatic rifles because I couldn't use one for deer hunting in PA, but back then the price was too good to pass up. I found out that it shot like a dream.
Then I became the enabler to a dear friend, a lady I went to college with and was a hunter, gun collector and Air Force officer. We met up one day for drinks and she mentioned she was wanting to get an M-1. It turned out that back then the Woolworth's store at one of the malls where I lived sold surplus military rifles, including M-1s. When I mentioned that to her, our next stop was Woolworth's and she became the proud owner of her own M-1 Garand.

This is a picture of a friend's vault. In the back right corner you can see some of his Garands. This was taken a few years ago and he has more now.

MY soon to be M1 Garand
I was at my LGS. and he had a never been fired CMP M1 Garand in the silver case and everything all the paperwork everything. I just could not say no. The problem for me was that I REALLY didn't want to have to reload another caliber. The owner told me that he could send it to Springfield and they would re-barrel it to .308. So I never even took it home. He is sending it out to Springfield to have it done. When and if I get it back I will post a pic of it. The biggest problem is going to be sneaking it into the house so the wife does not see it!

Just take an empty case out of the house one day and bring it back in with the new rifle in the case when you come back. I take so much stuff out and bring in so much stuff, that she has no idea of what I have.

M-1 Garand is what everyone wishes they'd had when the world lost its mind in 1939. It was just as remarkably effective when red's tried to begin rolling up control of the weak as a prelude to choking the West. Nowadays I have M-1's from WWII and of course the post war era. My all time favorites are a 5.9 million SA M-1 rebuilt by LEAD w/ a 1966 SA barrel. Gorgeous rifle. First five rounds fired ... 2" group left at 9 0'Clock. Sight correction... next five was 2" at 6 0'Clock. One click up and the next ten rounds were 10 ring. This rifle has been my match rifle since 2002. It has been unfailingly accurate. My most loved in a 5.9 SA M1 (2/56) which is my birthyear. I was getting it ready to give to my brother ... but he passed away before I could get it finished. I wanted to find a really nice DAS stock. Nowadays it is routinely nearby. Sincerely. bruce.

In all actuality, we have been past that subject for a long time ago(we will be married 49 years ago). Any more she never pays attention to what goes and comes. She could care less as long as it is not another woman!

Nice looking M1 rifle.
Be very careful because there is something in an oil finish on a black walnut stock that when absorbed through the skin is as addictive as crack cocaine.

Once you shoot one, you realize you’ve always needed a Garand.

Sweet rifle! One of those "someday" guns for me. Back in the '70s my father was working as a game warden and found 2 brothers hunting deer with M-1's. Problem was, magazine limit is 5 for semis. Wouldn't have gone too bad for them if they hadn't lied about shooting 2 does during buck season. The guns were seized. Even back then they were hurting. My dad said the guns looked factory fresh.

There’s some Garands, A3’s and A3O3’s in there. Maybe a NPM carbine and an M1A.

My collecting never got around to a good semi-automatic rifle. Thank you for the pictures and stories.

Where does a guy find a good M1 Garand that shoots well and not have to pay UNUSUALLY high price. I’m not a CMP member or belong to any clubs. I have a M1 Carbine and an 03 Springfield. Feel like I should round out the set but have little knowledge of the current Garand market. I have a feeling the overall gun mar Kate will not settle down during this political cycle so I guess I should get one as I am not getting any younger. What say you ?
