Been a watch guy for many years. I think it started when I saw 007's Rolex in "Dr. No" 50 years back. Took me until 1985 before I bought my first Rolex sub though.
Have an Omega Bond watch that was a bargain buy at the time, a Fortis aviator, another bargain buy and a mess of Seiko's.
Maybe ten years back I bought a $150 ETA 2824 watch from Howard Marx an on line dealer. Very basic auto, called the MP. A simple military type face on a nylon strap. That has been my every day watch 99% of the time.
I truly enjoy fine watches but unfortunately can't rationalize buying them. Saw the new Bond watch on TV the other day. Omega on the Bond, striped strap. Retail is $7750!!

But recently I been collecting a few Russian pocket watches in the Hunter models. To me these are works of art. 1947 Russian watches. There on eBay between $28/$125.
I do have the modern pocket watches for my suit.

I looked at those the other day and they seem as if they could be a nice accoutrement when your vest has a watch pocket. The "skeletonized" (exposed) works would be fun to view.

Pulling a "Peter Fonda" (the scene in 'Easy Rider' where he tossed his watch aside). Had you handed it to the young man, I would have been more impressed. Throwing vauable things alongside the road means very little... except pointless rebellion. YAAAAAWNNNNNNnnn. I tired of that during the "hippie" crazed '60's.
It isn't exactly new.

My other hobby is watch collecting. There are many on line watch wholesalers out there ,where you can save a lot of money off of MSRP.Watches have a 400 % - 600 % percent mark up ,depending on the brand. Most people who are not into watches tend to buy brands they find affordable at the mall.$400.00 - $700.00 can buy a really nice Lower end Swiss made ( Hong Kong of course ) brand like Tissot, Deep Blue, etc.

For a long time I didn't carry any kind of watch. I've got a cell phone now but I'd really like carry a pocket watch. It has a lot of soul as opposed to a digital or cell phone which has no soul at all.

If you haven't seen Shinola, you have yet to see an American-made watch! The parts are made in Switzerland, but the watches are fabricated in Detroit, Michigan. These retail at about $550.00 and are well worth the money.
"Made in the USA" means a great deal to these people, and they manufacture a quality product.

The movement only is a partial Swiss parts assembled in Hong Kong ,as is the case bracelet and crystal.

I like nice watches and wore Seikos for years. I'm rough on gear and they usually wind up pretty beaten. I'm not a big guy and most of the watches out there now take up too much wrist room. Part of the reason my Seiko's got so trashed, I bang into everything.
I found these a couple of years ago and gave it a shot for $40. It's a RAM 'rugged 1003R' made in China from Japanese parts. The band sucked so I replaced it with a Maratac and some quality pins. The first one died after about 6 months, RAM replaced it no problem. I've been wearing this one for 3 years, and picked up another, setup the same way to carry as a spare. Wore it for awhile to make sure it was reliable.
Last year the battery died at an inconvenient time, so I slapped on the spare till I could get the battery replaced.
They fit my scrawny wrist, and it's small enough I don't catch it or bang it on anything, still looks like new.

Got 2 Citizen atomic/solar and 2 Casio atomic/solar watches for work. Hard to give up on that AT feature, and the solar is mandatory for a radio controlled watch or you'll go broke on batteries.
The Citizen titanium Skyhawk Blue Angels is so accurate without the radio turned on I only turn the radio on manually during DST/Standard time changes. It gains about 3 sec a month.

I have several watches like Gruen,Elgin etc. But, the watches I wear are a Junghans Meister for everyday:
and a another Junghans for dressier occasions:
They have been making clocks & watches in Germany for about 170 years. Both of these keep exceptional time. I check them by an atomic clock daily.
Best,
Charles

Good to hear. I am looking forward to a watch that is virtually "never wrong". If I run the receiver every other day, I would be willing to bet that I can keep pace with more expensive watches without even trying. The Eco Drive has been touted as one of "the best in the industry".
Out of Idle curiosity, which do you prefer, Citizen or Seiko?

Radio control aside, both are equal. Even their mechanical movements are the most robust in the industry. I have a number of Seikos bought before Seiko came out with the solar feature.
I do have several Swiss Eta automatic movements, one I dropped on a cement floor in the shop at work. It hit a plastic lid on a shop vac on the way down, and it still works fine. The pendulum sticks a little in a certain point. Swiss Quartz suck compared to the Japanese brands.

I know exactly whereof you speak. If I leave the house without a watch, three knives (two slip joints and my Buck Auto Impact) and my pocket secretary (in my sport jacket inner pocket) I feel completely naked.
We can't have that, now can we?

What, no Smith & Wesson? Seriously there's more to a wristwatch than just time. If it weren't for that we'd all be wearing Casios.

They'll be sending me a Citizen Mens Atomic Eco Drive Watch Model # CB0020-50E. New without tags.
As I had posted earlier, I'll have paid $191.99 shipped to my PO Box. (It should be here by December 4th). If it's as good as it's reputation, it may be the last watch I'll ever buy. (I'll use it for a good 20-25 years). If it lasts that long, I'll be about 86. It will be money well spent.
Agreed?
|
That model is my other Citizen radio controlled. Only had it less than a year, but works fine. You can't turn the radio off and do it manually like I can on my Skyhawk.

I have heard good hings about Brietling. The expense is/was the only prohibiting factor. (Along the order of a Rolex).

Thanks for the information, Stenz. I am buying this watch expressly because it is Radio Controlled. Accuracy is the "watchword" (bad pun, I know). The Atomic receiver will never let me have an excuse for being late. Since it continuously "resets" itself, I can be where I want, when I want. No "Mulligan" needed.
To me, that's important.

Biiiiiiiig spender you are! For about $15 less, you can have one like mine. Last I heard, Piccard was captain of the Enterprise.

I always wear a mechanical watch. I will not depend on electronics to last very long. Same reason I have no electronics on my guns. I know it will be dead when I need it most, LOL!

Started wearing a Seiko dive watch in Vietnam. Tough, reasonably priced and stood up to the elements. Then, in the 90's bought my first G-Shock and have been with one ever since. Super tough and more accurate than anything I have with a mainspring.

Be sure to lay it face up and 9 o'clock near a window in the direction of central Colorado at nite. My radio watches are fickle about where I leave them overnite, could be a hit or miss on getting an adequate signal. The radio turns on at 2 am and repeats at 3 and 4 if no signal has been found.
