Default Model 17 Question of rarity

I have a model 17-4 serial number 95k0599 with a pinned barrel so I guess it just sneaks into this category although made in 1981.
It has a 83/8" barrel which I am sure is original and I was wondering whether this a rare length as we see very few over here in Oz
I also wonder why when some members post they replace the last two or three numbers of the serial number with Xs. I can understand that they may not want the world to know they have a pistol of some type but they have already revealed that

I wouldn't call it rare, but they're not very common.

Why hide the SN number of a gun ?
