Guys, I love reading all the excellent threads on this Hand Ejectors sub forum and other specialist gun forums but am a little confused why some people conceal the last numbers when showing pics of their guns - how could someone else knowing Mr X owns a M&P serial no. 710700 jeopodise or be a threat to Mr X ??

I own a few nice revolvers which I plan to photo and post here but am not concerned if someone else knows the whole SN. The fact people regularly do conceal the whole SNs concerns me if I am missing something.

I may be being a little nieve here but I just dont get it !!

Thanks for a great forum guys

Some believe that if an individual knows the s/n of the gun that you're showing, they can contact the PD and claim that it has been stolen from them. Whatever makes people comfortable, I guess. I don't worry about it.

Anyone filing a false police report in an attempt to commit felony fraud is welcome to try. Some folks claim privacy in hiding serials (um... OK) others genuinely fear legal hassle from someone claiming it's stolen (yet to hear of this actually happening and it would end VERY badly for anyone trying). I think some guys buy off the grid and don't want anyone (like the feds or the cops) knowing what they have in case they need to hide them from confiscation.

You want to hide the serial then go ahead. But there is no demonstrable reason for doing it.

It's easier to understand why people do it than it is to understand why it's offensive.

I thought everybody knew-

It's a well known fact that the 'greys' monitor gun forums regularly and record serial numbers. One day, just before the saucers start landing for the invasion of earth, they'll punch those serial numbers into their transporters and beam those weapons up!
Without a serial number, they can't transport them. ;)

You may have noticed that UFO sightings have dropped in recent years because they are currently occupied in another part of the galaxy. In their absence, they have hired Bigfeet to monitor the net for serial numbers for them. This is why Bigfoot sightings have dropped- they stay inside on their computers more.

Don't take my word for it- snopes it! ;)

I figure that no one has a reason to know my serial numbers, just like I don't often post pictures of my guns or even a full list of what I own.

Whether someone will steal the SN and report it to the police in an effort to make my life miserable is of minor concern but I've had people put my personal info in places that I didn't want it before so I'm cautious. In case you were wondering, my surname is not Guy and my parents did not give me the Christian name of Fat.

thats just like when you watch a reality show on tv, they block the vehicle plate # of a car , why its on the car where anybody can see it

My only concern is an anti-gun "activist" that falsely reports SN's as stolen. Even then, nothing would likely happen unless you go to sell the gun and someone has the number run.

Filing a false police report is felony, even an antigun is not that dumb. Well, at least most are not.
It would be highly unlikely that a report could be filed without some proof of previous ownership and even then it would be easy enough to clear up after the fact.

Recently I was sending a gun to some one with an cool sounding address, probably by the ocean I thought. It sounded pretty interesting so I put the address in google maps to see what kind place deserved that name. When the map came up there was a little icon of a person on the street in front of the location, curious, I click on the person icon. Next thing I know I am looking at their front porch, their entrance walkway and the nice landscaping, their wind chimes, a view thru the large picture window on the front of their house with what seems to be a view of their kitchen.

I don't hide my serial numbers, but I can easily understand why some folks do.

Thanks guys - that clears that question up quite nicely !!!

Dont quite believe that Bigfoot is now spending more time monitoring the internet on behalf of the aliens, how would his big fingers operate the tiny keypad buttons......the risk of double keying and making mistakes on S/Ns would be too great.
