Welcome to the Forum.

We need some info please. Is this a .38 special or a .38 S&W? Is it a breaktop or does the cylinder swing out to the side? Is the number "949" stamped on the butt (this is where the official serial number is located)?

Please post all of the markings.

Can you post pictures?

It is a .38 S&W with swing out cylinder with S/N 949 stamped on butt strap. It has patent numbers from July 1st 1884 to 1898 Manufactured in Springfield, Mass. The nickel plating and hard rubber grips are in excellent shape. I can't download pics to my computer but I can send the pics to a phone number if you would like to see them. It is a double action. Thanks

That sounds like it is going to be a .38 Military and Police Model of 1899, also called the first model.

I would invite you to send photos to my phone, but it has been acting up for about a week and I don't trust it. Maybe someone else can accept your offer.

Does it look like this, with no underbarrel lug to hold the front of the ejector rod? 1899 M&P 1st Model.

What I can tell from the photos is that that is is definitely a Model of 1899/1st Model .38 Military & Police (M&P). With a three digit serial number, it would be hard to imagine that it could be from anything other than the first year of production, and quite likely from within the first month's production.

A couple other things I notice are that the ejector rod knob is missing, and the strain screw (on the front strap of the grip frame) needs to be snugged up. That screw is to maintain tension on the mainspring that drives the hammer. If the screw is loose, the hammer may not have enough force to ignite the primer in the cartridge.

These guns look similar except the ejector rod, I've never seen the gun except in pics. The pic in my Gun Trader book looks more like the blued version above. I'll have him bring it to me so I can get better pics with my camera, I can post these. Thanks guys, by the way, this forum is great.
