1917 commercial
Well, I just made the deal on the commercial. I traded into it for about $1200. I would guess it is in 98%. It has a small amount of blue loss at the tip of barrel, and if you look real close you can see a faint cyl. ring. All numbers match except the stocks. They are 37 numbers off. Could this have happened at the factory? Thanks for any help. How do you folks feel? Did I do okay? Sorry, no camera so no pics. Thanks John

Would like to see a picture but sounds like you did OK. Some things that may help you date it.
Are the grip numbers stamped into the wood or written in pencil?
Is the ejector rod knob a mushroom type?
Is the flat under the barrel single or double milled?
Do the grips have medallions and if so what type?
Is the patent information on the hammer and trigger?
Congratulations Now get some moon clips and take it to the range!

1917
As per Jinks letter, it shipped Feb 14 1949. The numbers are stamped in the stocks. John

Congrats!
Yes it's highly more likely the stocks only 37 different than the gun's s/n was a swap at the factory vs. someone finding a pair of stocks that close to the correct # IMO.
You have one of only 900+ Post War Transitional Model 1917 Army commercial example.
Does that agree with your letter?

1917 commercial
Jim
It doesn't say anything about being one of the 900 plus. It did ship with a lanyard ring in Feb of 48
Thanks
John

I would bet that it is a sure thing the stocks were unintentionally swapped with those of another revolver right there at the factory. I have a set on an M10 with a stamped serial number that would match the revolver if a "3" was an "8".
The thing is, the "3" is so deeply struck that it really looks like an "8" if you don't inspect it under a strong light with a magnifying glass.

That's a bit odd but that's the only version it can be. Is the serial # in the range below?
The butt swivel is correct, some of the 900+ had it and some didn't.
Transitional Commercial models
In Dec 1936, logo ordered moved to the sideplate on the right and made larger.
In SCSW reportedly some few of these 1930 rd top frames (less than 1000) were also reportedly assembled in the serial range S209792-S210782, many of which shipped in the 1946-48 period.
n743tc ‘s #S 210529 has S serial # but not MADE IN U.S.A.: Model 1917 Commercial
