Welcome to the Forum and yes, that is a Model of 1899. Is it a .32-20 or a .38 special? Luckily, you have the knob that screws into the end of the ejector rod. Many of these are missing the knob.

No question that it is a model of 1899, either caliber. With a SN that low, it probably shipped in 1900, but a later shipment is possible. The closest SN I have listed to yours is 5445 which is a .38 shipped in 9/1900. I also show 4287 as a .32-20 which shipped in 9/1901.

I own #4287, a 5" blue .32-20.

I suspect this one is a .38. I can't quite read the caliber stamp, but it appears to be too long to just say 32 Winchester CTG.

Also, I don't own an 1899 in .32-20, but I have two Model of 1902s, one very early, and both of them have the caliber stamp on the LEFT side. Gil, where is the caliber stamp on your 1899?

Left side of the barrel-(dingbat) 32 WINCHESTER CTG (dingbat).

Welcome! That revolver would have no barrel caliber stamp. I have 38 1st Models, under around 6000 that have no stamping, but I believe that the 32 Winchesters were always stamped. If I recall correctly, the 38 caliber stamping started around 1901.

Just ran across a 17XX 32 Winchester w/o caliber stamp, and another 32 Win 37XX with stamping. Looks like the addition of those stamps were date dependent and both calibers maybe started in early 1901??

Just found Mike Priwer's 1899 38 1st Model barrel stamping thread. It appears that the 38 stamping changed in a narrow window, with 7485 having no caliber roll marking, and 7516 with ".38 S&W SPECIAL CTG"

Thank you to all that have replied. It is a 38 and it does not have a barrel stamp for the caliber. The revolver belonged to my father who past away many years ago, so I do not know much about it's history or where the wood grip came from.

Both of these 1899's are in the 8047 8636, and shipped Dec 1900 and Jan 1901 respectively. The Nickel one has a 4 line address, and was the incentive for Roy Jinks to stop the factory from "updating all markings" whenever a gun was sent in for a refurbishment. It was redone in 1971.

My Model 1899 ( SN 663 ) is marked 32 WINCHESTER CTG on the left side. CTG ends not much more than a letter's width from the frame. No dingbats.

In the archives, Forum member Mike Priwer has a survey of all locally reported .38 M & P model 1899s and which serial numbers had the caliber rollmark on the left barrel. Happy searching!

Left side caliber marks went way past the Model 1899. As I noted above, the start of 38 caliber markings was around 6000 and all were on the left side. Right around the start of the 32 WCF and 38 M&P 4th Change manufacture the caliber moved to the right side of the barrel.

Forgot to add that your stamping sounds correct. Here is a 19,XXX Model 1899 barrel stamp for the 38 Special and a 38XX 32 Winchester barrel stamp.

The discussion was about Model 1899s and the 32 W.C.F. did not appear until 1914. While there might be early exceptions, I do not believe that 32 W.C.F. appeared on the left side of any barrel.

From 1899 until 1913 - 32 Winchester CTG. (left side o barrel)
From 1914 until 1922 - 32 W.C.F. CTG (right side of barrel)
From about 1922-23 until the end of production (1940) - 32-20 CTG. (right side of barrel)

Anyway, here is a 32 W.C.F. stamping on the right side.

As I mentioned in post #12 above, my Model 1899 (SN 663) is marked 32 WINCHESTER CTG on the left side of the barrel. A photo clearly showing this is available in post #10 of the thread "32-20 Hand Ejector" started on this forum 12-18-2021, 03:35 PM. I started the thread. You made post #10, helping me out by pulling photos from GunBroker.
