Default .45 Colt Model of 1989 Blued 5" for $999?

Howdy!

An LGS has a lightly used blued .45 Colt Model of 1989 with the 5" half-lug barrel and non-fluted cylinder for $999.

Is that a good price?

Was it common on these guns for the cylinder to be a slightly different shade of blue than the rest of weapon?

Thanks!

Hunter

It sounds like you are talking about product code 100924.

sorry for the bad pic

The finish on mine and all the others that I have seen is not the traditional polished blue, it is more of a matte dark blue almost black look.

Since cylinders are not finished at the same time and place as the frames they are put in, there is always the possibility of color variance between the two. This is the exception and not the rule.

For me the revolver would need to be clean, in the proper box and with all accessories and paperwork for me to spend that much. However I already own one so that kind of controls my decision.

If I did not have one and really, REALLY wanted it, I would probably spend that much.

On the other hand, I would not sell you mine for $1000

Just curious...is it a Model 25-7 or a Model 25-9? They're virtually identical, although the 25-9 had some minor engineering "improvements".

And does this one have the Hogue rubber grips on it?

If it looks really really good, I'd say yes, $999 is good, especially since it's local and you don't have to pay shipping and transfer fees. If I was looking for another one, I'd pay that. I've seen them go for a good bit more. I've had two of them...they're a great gun, very accurate.

25-9

A bit of hoslter wear at muzzle, and definite turn-line on cylinder.

Cylinder is just a bit more "purple" than the rest of the matte finished gun.

Gun has non-S&W marked Hogue grips.

Thanks for the help!

Well, the turn line's a non-issue for me on those guns. Unless the gun's just totally untouched by anyone in the known universe, it's gonna have the turn line. Far as I'm concerned, that finish just quickly lends itself to a turn line. I've never seen one without it. They came from the factory with Hogues.

As a footnote, if it is a 25-7/25-9, it is well known for accuracy.

In short, they are lasers.

One of the best ever to come from S&W in that respect.

I HAVE A 625, MODEL OF 1989 WITH A 4" BARREL, THAT I PAID NORTH OF $1200. FOR, WHEN ALL WAS SAID AND DONE. ITS CHAMBERED IN .45ACP. I DON'T REGRET BUYING IT FOR 1 SECOND. I HAVE NOT SEEN ANOTHE 4" MODEL FOR SALE IN THE 3 YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED IT. IT IS THE MOST ACCURATE S&W REVOLVER THAT I OWN, AND IT HAS THE BEST OUT OF THE BOX TRIGGER ALSO……

THIS IS THE FIRST BLUED MODEL OF 1989 THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE ABOVE, I WOULD JUMP ON THAT DEAL, FROM A LGS, FOR $999. YOU SNOOZE--YOU LOSE ! ! ! IT APPEARS TO BE A BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER. IT WILL DEFINITELY APPRECIATE TO A GREATER VALUE THAN WHATEVER YOU HAVE INTO IT, AND YOU WILL HAVE THE PLEASURE OF OWNING AND SHOOTING A TERRIFIC REVOLVER….

THE .45 COLT IS A FANTASTIC CALIBER. THERE IS A VARIETY OF FACTORY AMMO AVAILABLE FOR IT, RANGING IN POWER FROM VERY MILD COWBOY LOADS, TO BIG HARDCAST SOLIDS, THAT WILL TAKE DOWN ANYTHING WALKING IN NORTH AMERICA. THE BIG EMPTY BRASS IS A VERITABLE PLAYGROUND FOR HANDLOADERS TO FILL WITH THERE SPECIAL BREW AND TOP WITH THEIR FAVORITE BULLET. I OWN A 625 MOUNTAIN GUN, CHAMBERED IN .45 COLT. ITS A FANTASTIC SHOOTER, THAT IS AS ACCURATE AS MY MODEL OF 1989 IN .45 ACP, BUT RUNS A VERY CLOSE SECOND IN THE TRIGGER DEPARTMENT, OUT OF THE BOX…..

IT WOULD COST SOMEONE QUITE A BIT OF MONEY TO PRY EITHER OF THESE OUT OF MY HANDS. LEST I FORGET, NEITHER HAS THE DISFIGURING IL. BELOW IS A PIC OF THE MOUNTAIN GUN, WEARING AHRENDS SMOOTH TACTICAL CONVERSION GRIPS, AS DOES MY MODEL OF 1989, AND MOST OF MY ROUND BUTT S&W REVOLVERS.…...

The 25-7 S.B. frame, glass bead finish, 5 inch barrel, black ramp front sight, target hammer, target trigger, unfluted cylinder, ".45 cal. Model of 1989" came with Hogues. They produced 1987.

The 25-9 S.B. frame, blue finish with fluted cylinder, and checkered Goncalo Alves target stocks. (both .45 Colt)

The 25-9 has a 4", 6" or 8 3/8" barrel. I believe the 25-7 was available as a 5" only.
The 25-9 has a polished blue finish, the 25-7 a mat finish.
The 25-9 has a fluted cylinder, the 25-7 is not fluted.

Interesting...

The gun in question is definitely marked 25-9.

5", matte blue, half-lug, non-fluted.

JUST TO BUILD / OWN SOMETHING UNIQUELY BEAUTIFUL, IMHO---- I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE AN 8 3/8" WITH A POLISHED, NON-FLUTED CYLINDER---ALONG THE LINES OF A BLUED CLASSIC HUNTER……….

People often misunderstand engineering revisions (the -# after the model number).

Engineering revisions indicate that there has been a change since the previous revision that would require different part(s) for a repair.

Engineering revisions do not determine product configurations. That is what the 6 digit product code is for.

Product codes indicate barrel length, finish, sights, accessories, etc.

The revolver picture I posted above as product code 100924 began production during the -7 engineering revision and finished during the -9 revision. 2000 total revolvers were produced. It is unknown how many were made in each revision.

Without looking at the frame for the model number, the only visual clue telling the two variations of 100924 apart are the stop notches in the cylinder.

As with all Smith and Wesson rules, there are exceptions to be found.

Thanks for everybody's input!

Here is the balance sheet...

PRO:

Limited production
5" barrel (I currently own no 5" S&W revolvers)
-9 engineering improvements
Demonstrated accuracy potential
It's a pre-lock N-frame

CON:

I don't really prefer the non-fluted cylinder
The off-color cylinder bluing will bug me over time
It's still over a $1000 out the door
The Hogues will have to go in the trash, but that's not really a con, just another order from Altamont for some checkered magna panels.

What to do, what to do...

Been on my want list for a while. Love to come across a good deal on one. I however, love non-fluted cylinders.

Default What to do...

It's chambered for the 45 Colt with a 5" bbl. in a Smith & Wesson action.

What's not to like ?!?

If it's a solid gun, with no problems, make them an offer & GET IT IF YOU HAVE THE $$$.

Well folks, I don't think this one fits into my grand acquisition scheme.

If anybody is interested, the gun is at the Orchard Ace Hardware in Loveland, CO.

Thanks for everybody's input and knowledge!

I was fortunate enough to find a 25-9 recently, that is brand new with the box/papers etc. It is the 5" half lug, unfluted cylinder with matte bluing. I love 5" barrels, as I find they balance so well for me. Could anyone offer some advice for reloading for this gun/calibre? I was hoping to use either Titegroup, Trailboss, or 231, as this is what I have on hand. Any thoughts on bullet weights; 200g vs 250g? I have never owned or reloaded for a .45 Colt, so I could sure use some help. This gun will only be used for target shooting at paper, so light to moderate loads would be a preference. Thank you.

Thank you.

Default 25-9

Hunter, thx for the lead on the 25-9. It's on it's way to Texas. Any S&W 45 is hard to come by here. Same thing with a Model 41. We have plenty of 357,41, and 44's but no 45's.

Those are nice revolvers. I have several unfluted S&W's, but my favorite revolver in .45 Colt is this 25-9...I think fewer -9's were made with flutes than the -9 "Model of 1989" unfluted variant. I got mine last year for ~$725. It is very accurate...I like using a 270 grain LSWC over 15.5 grains of 2400.

That model in the 25-9 version might be the only firearm likely to overcome my current efforts to make better use of my finances to accomplish some stuff I really need to do. If I were going to get it, I would have dropped $1000 plus shipping without too much hesitation even though I would like to pay less.

Doug, when I contacted the seller in Colorado I was surprised he still had it. In fact the first person I talked to could not find it. I insisted they did and it was finally located. This was on Wednesday, the mgr. was off till Friday. I finally got hold of him and bought the gun. I've been sick with a bug and was running a fever ( not on my game) when I made the deal. He said he was asking 999.00. I did not catch the insinuation he might come down. My wife was listening to the call and told me later that I missed it. Any way if you snooze you lose. Gun shipped to my FFL for 999.00

Well, a week ago I would have said that was way too much money, but a trip to a gun show in northern Arkansas this morning re-calibrated me: I looked at a 25-5 no dash (yes, the one with the over-sized cylinder throats) and although it was clean, it had no box, no papers, and had been shot. The guy told me he had to have $1000 for it... I politely told him mine just went up. It isn't anywhere near as clean as his is, but I can get it re-blued and still be somewhere around $300 less than what he wants for his.

Sheesh!

I watched an unfluted 25-9 sell at a gun show two weeks ago for $1100. Just the gun. I think the 25-7s and 25-9s have a lot of visual appeal to a lot of people. The caliber, the unfluted cylinder, and that matte blue finish seem to draw buyers' eyes. And the eyes of shooters as well. It's an N-Frame, a big hefty gun, even though it's just a 5-inch barrel. It looks like a man's gun. And once you get rid of those hokey looking Hogue grips and put some real grips on it, it looks even better.

That is nice. I'm adding a 25-9 to my "want" list.

Granted it is newer, but I picked up a 25-13, Sun at the local gun show. Virtually new, with box & papers. $850 was on tag. Seller was a regular that I have talked to in the past. He told me $750. I came back later & offered $725. He would not do it. I bought it anyway. Bought a box of ammo $45, & Starline brass. It went to the range Thurs. and it is awesome to shoot! My 1st long Colt. Got dies, and loaded my 1st Colts.
Not trying to steal the post. I would still like to own a non-fluted cylinder gun. Pre lock also. Bob

Nice find bananaman! How's your bluing? Any cloudy areas or is it uniform?

Don't worry about stealing the thread. The OP already said he's not going to get the gun. We 45 Colt lovers are just talkin' 45 Colt stuff now.

BLUEDOT, bluing looks good! I do want to put older more traditional grips on it. I was surprised that the felt recoil was a little stout with Winchester 250 gr. Cowboy loads. I put my shooting glove on and it became better. I think even though the size is good for me they seem a little slippery. This my first Long Colt, other than a 14" Contender I once had. Have a Sig 1911, and 625JM in 45 ACP. Bob

It's well documented that the 25-9 was available with a 5-inch barrel, non-fluted cylinder, and a matte blue finish.

Pistol arrived last week. Finally got all the components for loading. Got some 255 Keith style bullet with some CFE pistol powder. Put together several 5 shot loads. With me shooting. All things considered I was very impressed. It's a keeper. Matte finished non fluted 5 in. 25-9.

And $1200 didn't make the reserve? The seller must secretly wish to hang on to the revolver...

Seller just hopes some body will bite. Nice pistol but a little high. What I paid for mine is at the top.

I would pay $1k for that provided it was in good shape. I would rather pay $800, but I would pay $1k,.
