My customized J frame grips
I was looking for and not finding something like J frame Bantam grips that are like boot grips with a little extra material for a half a pinky for extra control without the bulk of a combat grip. I ended up modifying Mustang combat grips by grinding and sanding away all the wood I didn’t want. They are walnut, finished with a few coats of Tung oil. I didn’t shoot with them yet but they are comfortable in the hand. What do you guys think? Does this design have merit? If there is interest I might copy them in resin. Very nice.
I'd like to see more pics of modified grips and hear how people made them.

I like them but would prefer to see something that size that covers the backstrap. That’s the one thing, for me at least, that helps w/recoil & follow up shots.

They look nice and you say they feel great in your hand but the only way to really tell is to shoot the revolver a lot with those grips!I have done what you are showing but I never re-finish mine until I have tried them out.I take a wood rasp and sand paper to the range and shoot and fit until they feel great in recoil, then I refinish them.

You need to see and feel the new J Frame grips Culina in bringing out.

I like to hook my index finger to the first joint for double action shooting so I don't care for covered back straps. I have an old pair of modified Mustang grips on a model 10, no finger groves or back strap and a rounded base. Several tries to get it right. Rich5674 did a very nice job.

Recoil and follow up is a priority. I’m thinking the width (they are wider than Altamont Bateleurs) helps with the recoil. The finger grooves and the third finger to help with recoil. My range day will include +p 158s in a 14oz 360J.
LOL. Concerning rapid fire. I was “corrected” at the range for a 5 shot rapid fire string already.

Say what??? Did you hit the roof or something?
The grips look good.

No problems. Hit the chest area 5/5 at my max home defense distance (10yds). I think the range rules were 3 shot strings. I should have asked. They were nice about it.
Indian County Florida Shooting Range. Great place.

Culinas are beautiful but for me the 2 finger too small, 3 finger too big. for me the price would be $150ea and I have 2 J babies that need new shoes. I ache for the woods they offer but not in my budget either.

Those look nice, but I would make the grips go to the top of the frame. That squared off part of the frame would bite into my hand with anything but target loads. I think the best way to make comfortable magnum grips that don't cover the backstrap is to make them wide with a big radius at the top. Most grips I see are way too thin there, and don't give a rounded transition area.

Nice job on the grip.
I personally like finger grooves as they almost always fit my hand/finger but I know some people hate them as they never fit right. You'll never know until you try it.
Let us know if you decide to make resin version

I like what you did and think that a grip like that would fit my stubby fingers well. Like Toolguy said, perhaps a little higher coverage on the recoil shoulder to spread the recoil impact out.

True but these were made from other grips, not from scratch.
If I do design from scratch that will be a idea used.
Hardest recoiling loads used will be +P 38s, no magnums

Those grips look nice, but the gun looks awful small in the ops hand.

Then I've driven by it many times. Too far for me to join. It still seems like a strange rule. You couldn't even do a qualification practice drill. Not even the abbreviated FDLE qualification. I'm originally from Brevard.

Nice work.
I basically wanted the same 3 finger grip but with the backstrap covered. I found some on ebay that works good for me. The only downside is that speed loaders don't work with these grips.

The man has serious mitts for sure. I can see that configuration working very well for a large hand.
Nice work.

Only my opinion. If I feel the need for a speed loader, I’m carrying a semi with 7 to 10 rnds. If I think I’m expecting a gun fight, I’m going out with my 45
