Not a Smith, But a Hole's a Hole
Find attached a pix concerning the re-installation of a trigger guard on an old Savage 24J 22/410.
Sometime in its lifetime the trigger guard fell off. I have the correct parts (Numrich) but the front screw seems to have been attached to the receiver using a sleeve which is now missing.
Question...I was thinking of using a self taping plug to fill the hole then drilling and tapping the plug to accept the trigger guard screw.
Does this seem the easiest way to solve this problem?
Your thoughts please.

I'm not sure but sounds too technical for me.
Although it seems I've heard of fixing a cracked engine block with this method.

A helicoil is basically a threaded bushing, and would be the way to go if you can find one that would be close to the size you need. That is if you don't want to have someone weld up what you have and then drill and tap it.

I'm not familiar with the different variations, but I'm pretty sure the front trigger guard screw threads into the trigger guard from the inside of the receiver on at least some models. Are you sure you have the right TG and screw?

I'm pretty sure I do Chad. The original guard was plastic but this one is steel from Numrich's Gun Parts and fits perfectly. The rear screw, still okay, screws into what looks like a sleeve. Also this gun is not a real high quality piece, a true working gun. The receiver is one piece cast and, even if completely disassembled, I don't see how to access the screw head.
