Well gents, if you haven't seen it yet feast your eyes here
Here is a fully NY compliant MP15. Picked it up about 3 weeks ago, this picture is of it right out of box before even field stripping it. Put about 350 rounds through it so far, out of box @100yds was shooting about 6 inches to the right elevation was dead on however(1st target picture). Adjusted and now shooting groupings about 1.5inches just about dead on. The "grip" is a little funky at first but once you shoot a few rounds you dont notice it as much, only when trying to require target. The barrel has no birdcage so there is a bit more recoil then on most ARs. Overall I love the gun so far, once I am out of this wonderful state I will change out barrel and grip to make it pretty again
Any comments question about the gun either how it shoots or the features feel free to comment em up.

It does look a little awkward, but if it makes it NY legal ok. I guess that the stock is fixed too. Does it have to be registered with the state?

Yes stock is also fixed. No registration needed as this is now considered one of those featureless rifles.

And that's what keeps it from going rogue and slaughtering innocents on its own? The grip and lack of birdcage? Good to know...

That's actually not too bad looking for what's legal in NY. Some of those bent up twisted stocks are just plain hideous.
I used to live in Putnam County but escaped the gestapo last year. No regrets at all.

Well I certainly feel safer now!
Serious question. Is it as awkward to hold as it looks?

I like it... looks to be easier to use and less hideous that what's being used for CA featureless builds.

At first it was a bit awkward, but after a hundred rounds or so you sort of adapt to it. I find shooting with middle finger allows more of a grip because its further in your hand. Think of only having half a pistol grip, that is essentially what it is, called a "spur grip" Second video is my brother shooting any ar for the first time

That rifle looks more dangerous to me... no way to properly hold it. Can you even shoot it properly? I noticed that you were not using your trigger finger.

Hideous is relative. I prefer my CA build because it actually has a hand grip even if I can't wrap my thumb around it.

Yep. The really sad thing is that it still wouldn't be legal* to buy in my own moonbat state (MA) because it still uses a standard AR receiver, it's still a semi-auto and it still uses a detachable magazine.

You are a better man than me. I couldn't do it. Maybe it is just me, but it looks to easy to lose grip while shooting.

At this point I think I'd get the one with the funny grip-stock
It looks like it would be more comfortable to hold

In that video i was using middle finger, mostly for testing purpose because it allows for more grip. Here is another video using trigger finger from that day. These 2 videos were the first shots from its first range day.

I gotta say it does look extremely awkward, I think if my state enforced those restrictions I'd rather get a bolt gun, but fair play to you if you enjoy shooting it then why not.
Out of interest, are there any restrictions on semi-auto rifles that don't have pistol grips like the SKS or Mini-14?

not to move to NY, you just gave me the only one
I would ever need.

Does that half-a-grip restriction thingie in California apply to all ARs or just new sales?

Ar noob, good catch. I never even noticed I didn't have em on in that video. If you check the other video I have eye pro on, the videos were taken within 5 minutes of each other, must have forgot to put them back on. I ususlly wear my eye pro.
Irb, NY is horrible, I wouldn't wish this place on my worst enemy lol. If you were tjink8ng of moving here, don't. I hate to say it like that but it's the truth. Unless you like spending more for the exact same products, having less freedom and paying more in taxes then come right over
Mus muggins, what don't you understand? Maybe I can help?

That was just that one video for testing purposes, I am sure there's others that do shoot like that regularly but that video I linked was purely to see which was more comfortable. Plus, it's always good to know how too shoot "out of your norm". God forbid you need to shoot but for whatever reason can't use your trigger finger.
Edit, shooting with middle finger allowed more of a grip on the spur but shots weren't as accurate.

As far as I am aware there are no restrictions on firearms such as the sks and mini14. From my understanding, they are not classified as an "assault weapon". Pretty much an AW in New York is....
A firearm able to accept a detachable magazine and one or more of the follow "military" features, collapse or folding stock, pistol grip, muzzlebreak/compensator/flashhider, ability to accept one of the previous meaning a threaded barrel, bayonet lug, a Grenade launcher, second grip held by non trigger hand. I believe that is all that is in the stupid law defining an assault weapon.

The 5 shot group circled isn't bad... using a rifle that you can't hold, and no idea what ammo you are using.

All you need to know is that some people in New York State now feel safer because of this monstrosity. Nothing else about it really matters. It's "for the children" after all.

When you move, just get another one and keep that one as is.
Hopefully, it will be a curio/collector item as in " Look what they had to do back then to make a gun legal and supposedly safe. Crazy, huh?"
It might be worth a fortune because when they're history, not many people will be keeping theirs "as is".

Me too - I mean why would anyone compromise safety and quality shooting just to own an 'AR' - heck if you are in a restrictive state and still feel the need for a semi get something conventional like a Mini or BAR and have a better (and safer) shooting experience. Personally I'd go with a BAR - Minis have terrible ergonomics - for me anyway.

You forgot NJ.
Oh, the unSAFE law will never be repealed, ever. Best hope is a SC decision, and even then, NY will just ignore it.
Of course many people are just ignoring the law altogether, I saw many folks at my old range with good old regular AR's, and even at some public ranges.
I believe AW registration in NY was less than 5% and many of those were cops who were threatened if they didn't fall in line.

No.
The "Safe Act" isn't intended to enhance the safety of the shooter, but the safety of those he's aiming at.

CP, it applies to all AR/AK rifles. S&W went the fin grip route. Springfield uses the Survivor Systems buttstock on the Saint. And Ruger uses the Hera CQR. Sport2 doesn't have a threaded muzzle, while the other 2 have brake/comps.

I see... they all prevent the thumb from wrapping around the grip.
Is the Mini-14 gaining in popularity out there?

I'm on a number of NY gun forums.
Seems most times it appears to be an issue in the commission of another crime( drunk driving, assaulting a family member, etc) and you have one in your home or car.
I know many NY cops and none of them care about the SAFE law, and in fact, hate it as much as the next gun owner, but there's always a few in any group who...well....
"Full featured" AR's are still legal if you owned and registered them by......I forget the exact date, Jan 2014???
Any mags over 10 rds are illegal, no grandfathering either.

That is the NY salute?
Where did you buy it in upstate NY?
It has to be more accurate than a Mini-14...
How big is the flash?

I am in Putnam County. Flash is pretty large, you can absolutely feel the difference in recoil as well.

No, I live right near it, but from what I hear they haven't been accepting new members for a few years now. I shoot at blue mountain in Cortland.

Up until recently they were taking new members. I was a member for 20 years but didn't renew this year.
Too far to commute
It's a great range and I miss it a lot, not many places like it nearby. Great people there also.
Check on their website frequently to see when membership opens up.
Putnam County Fish andGame
I lived less than a mile away as the crow flies.

...quote from Hudson Valley One...July 2016...
Quote:
That data shows massive noncompliance with the assault weapon registration requirement. Based on an estimate from the National Shooting Sports Federation, about 1 million firearms in New York State meet the law’s assault-weapon criteria, but just 44,000 have been registered. That’s a compliance rate of about 4 percent. Capanna said that the high rate of noncompliance with the law could only be interpreted as a large-scale civil disobedience, given the high level of interest and concern about the law on the part of gun owners.
“It’s not that they aren’t aware of the law,” said Capanna. “The lack of registration is a massive act of civil disobedience by gun owners statewide.”

Yea, not many people complied to that ridiculous registration. I don't think I know anyone personally who did. those damn law breakers. Also like stated, its not really enforced unless it comes up in some other investigation.

My condolences for what your political overlords are doing to the law-abiding citizens of New York.
Yes, that AR looks awkward, but it is a shooter. Enjoy it while you can before Albany decides to take it away from you.
