What would your “bug out” handgun be?

If I were bugging out, I'd probably take this old beat-up Glock 19 Gen 2. Sufficiently powerful to make a stop, reliable, discreetly tuckable, plenty of capacity (might take along a spare 33 rd. mag) and if it became confiscated or lost, no big deal. Ammo available everywhere.

An older person once told me during inclement weather - Do not dress simply for the walk from the house to the car, but rather if you have to walk home from where the car stopped.

Personally I tend to take a 9mm with the ability to function reliably over time with little to no maintenance and a couple extra magazines - for any shorter term rushed time away. Say family emergency pops up suddenly out of town, etc.

If it is an all out evacuation, like fire, hurricane, which could destroy residence, etc. - would take more, but that is a less likely to occur scenario for where I am. My family knows what to grab if that ever does occur, though. It is good to get lists made for what is important, and make sure each family member participates. You may be surprised by what some think is important, that you never thought of - and also what some might grab thinking it is important, when it is not.

I have a backpack or two that I keep filled with stuff that I use regularly, but even then, there are some items that are easily left in a car if necessary to go on foot. I am not young, and have no desire to expend what energy I have left toting more weight than what can be deemed absolutely necessary.

I have gone from a good smith revolver or 1911, to a beretta 92 or sig 226 to glock 19/26, and now tend to favor either a sig 320 m18 or 365xl.

Fast answer would be Ruger 10/22 take down pistol. You could vacuum seal fifteen 300 round packs of 22LR that would pack flat and you would be carrying 4500 rounds of waterproof ammo all in a small backpack.

If I had to run and leave for an indefinite period with no guarantee of ever coming back I would pick my 2" model 34-1 with a carry on bag of ammo. If for a short time a model 986 with a bunch of moon clips or a model 10 would be fine.

Inside the ConsoleVault in my Suburban 'lives' a Taurus G2C with sight and trigger upgrades, runs flawless. A magnetic strip inside the vault holds 5 magazines upright. Also keep $500 in twenties inside the vault as well.

Interesting choice of only a weak, small caliber with limited ammo capacity and no serious fighting caliber pistol or long gun.

"For hunting" I'll bet 9 out of 10 "buggers" would starve within a week if they had to hunt for food......Only place they could probably kill a squirrel is a city park.

Mike, I have hunted for over 50 years. I don't kill much, so my daughter once said, "Dad, if we had to live off what you bring home from hunting,, we'd starve." To which I replied, "If we had to live off of what I killed when hunting, I'd be a lot less discriminating as to what I killed."

Your point is well taken.

I'm going with my Glock 17 as well as taking the barrel and magazines from my Glock 22. (Or I could go in reverse). When thinking about ammo resupply, The Australian Defence Force use 9mm while the majority of Australian Police Forces are still using .40S&w.

Just a question. I always thought that you could get a 9mm conversion barrel for a Glock 22, but a Glock 17 barrel would be too small in diameter for a Glock 22 slide. Also thought the Glock 22 barrel would be too large in diameter for the Glock 17 slide. I might be wrong. Have you actually tried/used either of these two swaps you talk about?

Not bugging out.
Flooding or forest fires are not an issue here.
All my stuff for staying alive is here.

If I did have leave for a few days only I would take a small, easily-concealable .22 revolver and a couple hundred rounds of ammo.
Something like that would be easier to get past checkpoints.
If it were practical, I would have a .22 rifle with subsonic ammo for it as well, knowing there would be a possibility of having to ditch it sometime so as to appear unarmed.

I for one will be “bugging in.”
As I am a died in the wool K frame .375 Magnum devotee, several of these will be my first option.
Now if I have to go on the road and weight was an issue, without a doubt I’d take my M-39, do to additional rounds in gun and easy to carry reloads.

Hope it never happens but, better to have and not need than to need and not have.

If I was leaving the house in an emergency I'd grab my Ruger 10/22 take down and whatever 1911 was handy. I keep a brick of the 22LR that the Ruger is sighted for in the carry case along with a couple extended magazines. Frankly I think it's the most practical emergency firearm I own.

Another fan of the 10/22 take down model. The bag it comes in has two large out side pockets. Perfect for extended magazines, extra ammo, knife etc. The other pocket right now holds a S&W compact. 22. with extra mags and more ammo. I'd prefer a 317 but this auto eats everything I feed it. Even dirty bulk **** sitting in an old coffee can.

In a real event realistic ammo choice comes down to availability. 9mm. and .22's are the top players here. I like the vast amount of .22 per weight/volume.

I know the big gun guys will say it's underpowered. But I stopped counting when I zipped up my 125th. bodybag. Of the gunshot victims most expired from .22's. They do work if you do your part. Just sayin'.

LOL
My thoughts exactly... those of you who live in Montana and Wyoming, imagine the rest of us heading your way, in cars packed with dried food and grandchildren, armed to the teeth.

Might be harder to get to Montana than you think.
The roads will be clogged, thieves will be shooting and stealing from the people stranded on the roads ( prompting shootouts ). There will be various kinds of roadblocks, legal and illegal.
Where will people get gas?
The above describes a societal breakdown kind of scenario.

Country folk can and will survive....... be it Wyoming or the Laurel Highlands of Penn's Woods.

If you as strangers show up "armed to the teeth" and aggressive, be aware; so are they......they grew up shooting deer, groundhogs and coyotes at 100.200.300,400 yds.
They know their neighbors and will band together to protect their own.

Most will try to help but will not be taken advantage of, or jeopardize "their" family and neighbors.

and they have backhoes!!!!!!!

Is this long term or short term bug out,
Many possibilities.

Do I take a 1911 because the army used them and it has been around forever and parts and mags should be available .
Beretta 92 because the army used them and same reason as the 1911 parts and mags.
Sig 320 same reason as above.
Glock 19 parts and mags.

Colt or S&W 357/38

of course a Ruger 22

Sticking strictly to the original query, it would be the HK VP9. I've got a small bag which holds the pistol and 5 extra mags.

However, it the situation posted were ever to come to pass, I'd grab a bag...not a pistol. The bag is a 42" double rifle bag which currently holds a Mossberg 500A with 18.5" barrel (and a 28" barrel with AccuChokes) on one side, a scoped Winchester Model 100 on the other side, and a HK P30SK tucked into a pocket. Extra pistol mags, two 8-round Colyer clips for the 100, and a 60-round bandolier would be included. It would be heavy as hell, but I could survive.
