How is this Mossberg Shockwave legal?

I kind of want one. With zombie green furniture and an axe head clamped to the muzzle end.

I would have thought a 12 gauge hand gun would have been all kinds of illegal ! Interpretation of the rules is paramount.

I witnessed a policeman try to dispatch a rabid dog that was terrorizing our neighborhood , walking and riding paths on my street.
He had a stockless 12 ga. pump, the dog started for him and from point blank range, talking 6 feet when he fired , he missed 4 times!
I watched it and couldn't believe what I saw. Those things aren't easy to shoot accurately when you are shooting under pressure ! I decided right then and there I didn't need a stockless pump shotgun. A double barrel Howdah pistol would be fun to play with though .

I had one in my hands 2 weeks ago I could have paid and walked out the door . It is not a shotgun .

I want to get a grip ...

... Shockwave does sell the PG separately. You could just take a PGO Mossy and put it on and trim the barrel down... A conventional PG isn't long enough. You'd just have to remember to start with a PGO and not something that ever had a stock on it... Regardless of utility, they are more comfortable to use than a conventional PG. Not as hard on the web of your hand and your wrist. You can also use the tang safety on the Mossy easier too.

Good to hear that the birdshead PG will be available. I have a Mossberg "Cruiser" that has the conventional pistol grip on it and I can see the utility of that style grip. Head thumper comes to mind, but with a carbide tip screwed into it it would also be a good window exploder rescue tool.

How is this Mossberg Shockwave legal?

I think Mossberg explains it well enough right here.

So - I can just walk into a store and buy one, the same as buying an H&R Topper?

I doubt it, for the simple reason that Mossberg hasn't shipped enough of the things yet. But when they do arrive in volume at LGSs, yeah, you can walk in and buy one with no tax stamp. Projected retail right now is $449.

I have one on special order right now...no telling how long it'll take to get here. The owner of one large LGS tells me he has them on order from Mossberg, but no projected delivery date yet.

And in the end, does it really matter how it's legal? Why get all involved in the intracacies of federal law and BATFE rules. Mossberg isn't going to manufacture, ship, and sell an illegal firearm.

I have one on pre order from Bud's. Total cost was $400.67 with free shipping.

Seems a lot of people want one of these. Utility aside, I think the draw is just to own a SBS that is technically not an SBS at all and comes with no extra paperwork or headaches.

Plus I hear the birdshead grip and strap forend are nice for taiming recoil. I plan to use mine for fun woods blasting and to keep in my bedroom as a fixed position barricade gun alongside my Browning Hi-Power.

SO MUCH FALSE INFO!

Got one on pre order from Buds. I don't think they have been released anyswheres yet.
Rifled or smoothbore don't matter a whit. those 54 & 58 caliber muzzle loading pistols that have been around "forever" are "destructive devices"?
1: Don't take interweb OPINIONS as fact.
2: nobody said life has to make sense. To me if it fires a shotgun shell, that would make it a shotgun, NOT whether it has a shoulder stock or not. IMO
3: Don't you think Mossberg would find out if it's legal BEFORE pouring millions into making/selling them?
4: They are NOT NEW. I've seen them at gun shows for a while now. (within the last year???)
5: IMO YES mfg'rs (not just Mossberg)are exploiting the whole "not a shotgun loophole"
6: Yes I think they will sell more of them because they look so
"bad -" vs how well a shoulder stock will actually let you hit your target.

Bro. What you've been seeing are modified guns but not the true Mossberg factory version. The stuff to make these has been out for a while, but a pre-made version from Mossberg with it's own model number etc. had not been released yet.

I am fully aware this won't be as good for actual shooting as "muh daddy's" duck gun or anything with a proper stock. Don't care. I bought it because I've always wanted a "sawed off Hollywood" style shotgun. Why? Because I just do, and nobody ever said a gun has to be super practical to own or enjoy.

I have a bro & you are not him. You have it ENTIRELY WRONG. Those "whatever you want to call them" are in NO WAY MODIFIED,& come exactly like that from the factory. That is how they get around the 18" barrel length loophole, because they WERE NOT MODIFIED. NO they are not the same as Daddy's shotgun. There are other manufacturers than Mossberg making them, & it could be another brand I've been seeing at gun shows.

Best laugh I've had all day so far. Thanks.

Actually they are modified, either by the company who makes the accessories, or by gun owners who buy the parts and do the mods themselves.

There are other manufacturers than Mossberg making them, & it could be another brand I've been seeing at gun shows.

What you've probably been seeing at gunshows are shotguns that have been modified by a company like Shockwave Technologies.

They take a Mossberg pump shotgun, usually the 500 or 590 that comes with the pistol grip, and either modify it themselves and sell them, or sell the parts. Someone has to shorten the barrel to 14". Then a magazine tube lug must be added. They sell the "Raptor" grip, which appears virtually identical to Mossberg's birdshead grip. They even sell a strap kit for the forend that'll make the gun look like a Mossberg factory gun.

Speaking for myself, I'll wait for the actual Mossberg product and be sure of having a decent factory warranty.

You need to chill out. You WERE seeing other brands, NOT MOSSBERG MADE ONES. See, I can use caps lock too.

DEFINE MODIFY.

In the context of this thread, (& the SB <18" rule) that would be any change to the gun from it's original factory condition. It would be easy enough to add that pistol grip & cut down the barrel of a model 500, but that would be illegal. Buy it new from the factory in the exact same dimensions, & it is legal. Clear as mud? :) In case you didn't read my first 2 posts correctly, I'll say it a third time. There are other manufacturers making them.
