Does anyone make hunting coats anymore??

I think Paul said...

Google “Paul Harrell’s shooting jacket”, God rest him. It’s long out of production, but has what you want, I think. EBay might have something like it.

...that he bought them when he found them online in various places and he was able to find enough to have a small collection.

Hunting Coat

I'm talking about a nice hunting coat (preferably dark green waxed cotton) WITH A GAME POUCH. I don't want it for country walks in the shire, nor do I want it for urban wear. I want it to wear in the field-swing a shotgun and put small birds, birds and/or rabbits in the pouch. Don't care if it gets stained or has left over feathers in it-just want it to be waterproof and allow me to swing a shotgun.
Filson is nice but no game pouch. Barbour is nice but no game pouch. The outback is nice but my days of Drover'ing are long past and wearing dusters doesn't work on us short fat coon ***es. Help me out here guys. Do not need nor want camo-my camo is to shut up and stay still-has worked for me- but if a jacket has a game pouch and lets me swing a shotgun, I'll wear camo.
Oh and while I'm grousing' saw a nice pair of "wader' pants by Sitka for only $345. Whatever happened to wearing a pair of $15 Walmart sweatpants under the waders???
This bougie hunting stuff is really getting out of hand!!!!!!!!!!!!

Orvis, may have what you want.
👍👍

How much did you say your name was?

German central Europe does have makers of precisely what you seek. I own such a coat. What is your sport coat size? I ask for two reasons:

1. These coats "wear" much larger than coat size.
2. I have never worn my coat in the field - nor anywhere after verifying its fit (now about two sizes too large). Four spinal surgeries, one of which fused five cervical vertebrae - plus the "crusher", non-repairable cracked C-1* - has pretty much trashed my fantasy career as a Remitance Man. The Austrian made coat is exceptionally well made, precisely what you seek, and unbelievably costly.

Hope this helps.

I bought a Filson in the late 90's for $250, it has all the features you mentioned. I thought it would last the rest of my life. But about 6 years ago my wife sinned by throwing it in the washer! (That would remove the last bits of Wax Proofing. When it came out of the washer From the top of the right pocket down "Dissolved!"

AS a rite on repentance, she bought a replacement. A Barbour XXL Classic Beaufort at about $479. The hood was $79, and the liner was $179!

I took an Army Field Jacket Liner that cost $15, and my wife sewed in buttons, saving a fortune! I bought the hood, and the whole set-up works great.

In the game pouch I keep a small survival kit at all times that is in a little waxed canvas bag, made from my first coat. I all set for Hot/Cold and Wet/Dry. BTW The left front pocket alone will hold 100 410 shells!

Warning: ALL Barbour coats are left hand zip! It's a Europe thing!

I was looking for a replacement flourescent green work jacket over 10 years ago at a local store that sold high end work gear and clothing as well as custom made work boots, shoes. There was a beautiful leather coat with fur-like lining, marked down 50%. It seemed large and was marked in metric numbers, I put it on and it fit like a glove, heavy, warm...like for Siberia, seemed to be made out of elk or moose dyed black, not shiney. I looked at the price $550, marked down to $225. I then noticed it zipped on the left, I immediately thought it was made for a woman and hung it back up. A month or so later I came back for some boot repair as I wore their custom made work boots (Whites) and they even replaced your laces when they wore out, while you waited. While I waited I walked around in my socks and there is this coat still...I am amazed because it was a dandy, it is now reduced to $125. I asked a very helpful salesperson why it has not sold "Its all about the zipper." I told her that I have a female friend that would probably fit that coat it would be great on her. She said "Its not made for a woman, it was made in Canada and Europeans zip on the left as well." True enough when I looked inside it said "Made in Canada". She said "I can make you a deal for $100 out the door." I said "Deal" and paid on the spot. That coat is so damned warm I can't wear it unless its close to zero out, but then I am about the only warm bugger in the area.

Interesting.
Traditionally, going back 250 years or so in Europe and North America, the nicer women’s shirts, blouses and coats have had the buttons ( and later zippers ) on the opposite side as compared to men’s clothing. Still applies somewhat to this day.
I have read it got started by tailors who made clothes for upper class European women because they were often dressed by a maid, and with most maids being right-handed, it made the buttoning process easier for them.
Case in point, as a man, buttoning the shirt you are wearing is MUCH easier than buttoning a shirt another guy is wearing if both shirts have the buttons on the wearer’s right (male pattern).

As you can see, I am a fountain of useless knowledge, and a long time member of the KOOKS ( Keepers Of Odd Knowledge Society) 😬
Cheers!

LLBean has what you are looking for - Men’s Double L Waxed Cotton Upland Coat in loden color. I have the same coat in brown and have bird hunted in in for more than 10 years. Good quality and has held up well. Currently on sale for $225. Only complaint - I’ve grown some during the last 10 years and it’s a little snug.

Marlin57M, brother you haven't grown. It's a well known fact that the longer clothes hang in closets, they shrink!! So, you don't have a growing problem, you have a shrinkage issue.

Woolrich has what you’re looking for but I’ve only seen it in light or dark brown. Most companies refer to them as upland game costs. I’ve been wearing Woolrich Wool Buffalo Plaid for almost 40 yrs. Can’t wear them out.
THAT's the answer. If it ain't a Woolrich, it ain't a Hunting coat.

I bought mine in 1966 and replaced it in 2000. Not that it needed to be replaced, I just got too fat.

I have my Dad's from about 1939. (nostalgia, family heirloom) He used it until he was 78 years old. It wasn't used up yet, he just had health problems and stopped hunting.

All this talk about hunting coats inspired me to pull out the red wool coat that my dad wore and handed down to me. It still has the original label that identifies it as American Field Sportswear made by The Hettrick Mfg. Co. in Toledo, Ohio. Pop probably bought it in the late 1950s or early 1960s. It seems like he had it as far back as I can remember. I can't quite get into it anymore (amazing how they shrink in the closet) but I can't even think about letting it go. I've sewed up or pinned the holes and it still looks pretty good. Probably nothing like this is made any more. My youngest nephew can probably get into it, so maybe I'll leave it to him even though he's a couple inches smaller than me.

I'm not sure you can find the old brown cotton duck coats anymore. or the brush buster pants. I fatted outta mine a decade ago.

I've still got my Filson Tin Coat jacket I purchased in the 90's for Pheasant Hunting. Still holds up well, got the game vest and chaps as well.

A while back now I was invited to the Michigan Upper Peninsula for Deer Hunting.
I took my warmest coat which was my issue Parka.
When my Host - my Buddy’s Dad - saw the fur on the hood - he just came unglued!
I wound up wearing a borrowed Filson.

This curmudgeon would rather spend his hard earned cash on guns & ammo than Lord of the land left zippered coats 🧐
I still use my 3 score & 10 year old GI
M-65 field jacket with or without liner, in OD, Olive Drab or Woodland Camo.
The below waistline billow pockets will hold 3 or 4 dove each, or 1 pudgy cotton tail rabbit each.

We camped in a Hettrick tent for many years.
