I have a nice .38 only 640 no dash. Sn# BKR53**. Wondering when it was made and if it was part of a LE batch.
With that, I can not find any MIM parts in it so I suppose “pre MIM”? Was the barrel a forging and conventional rifling or the ESP rifling like current production?

As far as I know, the 640ND is pre-MIM. Check the back of the trigger. If it's solid, it's forged. If there's a groove, it's MIM.

It should have a conventionally rifled bore.

Can't help with your other questions. Hopefully, someone will be along to answer those.

640NDs are nice. It's been my "grail" gun for several years. Came close to getting one a few times, but they always slip from my grasp. Someday I'll get one.

P.S.: Gun photos are always appreciated. :)

I have a model with CEN000xx indicating one of the first 50 to roll off the line in ‘89 ......+P+ ammo rated. Among my favorites.

I also have a CEN# gun but with a higher #. How many were made with the CEN prefix

My 640 is BRB4446 and it was made in 1993

Never been able to determine - there are threads on here that reference into the thousand area, fron memory.

Yours should be marked +P+ ammo.

I suspect '91/'92 is about right for the OP's gun. I bought my 640 new about 93/94. It has a BPU prefix, and Julian date on box indicates '93 production. Carried it for years, until I had the opportunity to carry the lighter 642 instead;)

Just looked at my 940. It has a BPW prefix that I suspect is '93 production too.
