Anyone have an idea as to the approximate quantity of S&W 3” Barrel, Model 640’s Mfg

@>>> Anyone have an idea as to the approximate quantity of S&W 3” Barrel, Model 640’s Manufactured ?

Hello Gents, I’m curious as to the approximate number of S&W MODEL 640 [ No Dash, IIRC ] with the 3” BARREL, not the 1 & 7/8” variant ? I surmise that the Total Quantity can not be too high, as IIRC, the 3” Model was only Catalogued for perhaps 2, maybe 3 years ? I’m referring to the All Steel, DAO J Frame Rd Butt, in .38 Special of course. { I have all the pertinent data via mine’s Box Label should anyone require such information, just ask. } Should anyone happen to know, & or perhaps have reliable information as to the Quantity produced, & total years of manufacture, I would deeply appreciate hearing from them. 😊

In closing here, I thought I might share a few of my observations concerning this very efficient, & effective J Frame Revolver. These 3” Barreled M-640’s remain amongst the most user friendly J Frames when thinking about ‘immediate, readily accessible, up close & personal self defense scenarios’. They are however, sadly overweight when compared against some others, yet at times, such weight can become your friend should rapid, follow up action is necessary. So, therein lies the unsolvable dilemma, light & easy carry - or - somewhat heavier but significantly more controllable ?

Best regards, Dom P.

Excellent question OP. I will be following to see the answer.

I would also be curious the same info for the 642 w/3 inch barrel.

That could solve the weight issue.

Here is a pic of each.

THANK YOU '326', I appreciate your comments. If you are so very fortunate as to have obtained an 3" 642, you are in possession of a very rare Revolver indeed !! I was under the assumption that although very briefly listed in the Catalog, no actual production was ever initiated ? In fact, when I originally came across my 642, I badgered my Dealer to promise me the very first 3" 642 that he ever came across. At that point in time, the Dealer was extremely eager to please me as I had just awarded my Department's Armorer Position, & they wanted our Contract. But, try as he might, there were not any 3" examples to be had, & he even called S&W for me as it was only an hour ride away. And that's why I picked up my 2" 642, although I cherish it because not only is it an awesome little companion, it was part of a Special Run from RSR IIRC. It was a 'Ladysmith" Edition, & featured a very smooth DAO action, & was Factory MagnaPorted !! And yes, I debated about the small cursive Ladysmith Logo on the Sideplate, but that only lasted about 2 minutes. I simply couldn't pass up those Special Features. Therefore if you managed to grab one, you are truly fortunate !! I even called S&W to ask if they could install a 3" Bbl on mine, but they said they couldn't due to the Frame or something. Hey, I even considered a Ruger 3" LCRx !!

Best, Dom P.

Good Morning '326' My Friend, I'm curious to know if your 3" 642 is Marked 'Airweight' on the Right Side of its Barrel, & what particular Markings are on the Frame, inside the Yoke Cut ? [ As
where we normally find the Model Designation. ] And lastly, if you happen to recall the approximate date you purchased it ?
I will of course be most appreciative for whatever you information you may be able to provide !! THANK YOU,

Best, Dom P.

Except for the XS Big Dot front sight, the Wolff eleven pound trigger return spring and the Hogue Bantam grip, this S&W 642 3” is in factory original condition:
