Well, here's an odd new addition to the herd.

According to Dr. Jinks' letter, S&W shipped Model 36 41J6XX to
Clearfield Hardware Co., Clearfield, PA, on May 14, 1971.

He goes on to say, "... it is in the middle of a group of 60
revolvers specially manufactured for the New South Wales Police
Department of Australia. It is my opinion that this revolver was
accidently [sic] shipped to a domestic distributor by mistake."

Target trigger, Model 49 hammer, and New South Wales Police
Department logo on the side plate.

It's as new in the box.

The best logo shot I could find online says, "Police Force" (not
Department). Otherwise the logo is the same as stamped on
the Model 36.

The latin proverb in the ribbon at the bottom of the logo means,
"Punishment follows closely behind crime's heels; crime doesn't pay," according to WordSense Dictionary online.

We're having a blizzard now so I shot these poor photos inside.

Nice addition to the stable, Bob! I really like it. And yes, a bit odd that it shipped to Clearfield, and not New South Wales. And that Mod. 49 hammer exposed is interesting too. Very nice, indeed.
That piece shipped on my 20th birthday. IIRC Clearfield Hardware was still in business ten or fifteen years ago. May still be. I live about 100 miles east-south-east of Clearfield. A group of us would make a trip there annually to go to Grice's Gun Shop, which billed itself as the largest gunshop in Pennsylvania. We would go in to town to eat, and for some reason I remember the hardware store. It was owned by two brothers and had been in business for over 100 years. They had some old stock knives and ammo in the rear that we would check out.
Your pictures are good enough to make me envious!

That is a nice find. I collect police-marked firearms and have been after a Victoria PD S&W 10. I didn't know that any other Aussie PD marked their duty guns.

Now I have to add this one to the list

Great find, Bob! Congratulations!

The term unicorn tends to get overused, but the circumstances here of gun and letter destination would appear to justify it.

Is it a plain box that someone could have put on the wrong stack?

Thanks.

Yes, could be. It's a standard two-piece blue box, and the "special features" on the end says, "New South Whales" [sic]. :):):)

A very unicorny Smith. I have one actually from NSW but it's only a Cadet .32-20/.310 rifle, not a unicorn. Very bad weather creating terrible flooding going on down there now.

I guess those whales can catch everyone. ;)

At least Barneby's got it right in the text.
