My son is an AK-47 fan. He hopes to track down a good Romanian AK-47 with a standard wood stock. I assume there are web sites where he can get more information. Does anyone have any recommendations of web sites where he can learn more? Thank you!

When WASRs first came out they were bad mouthed for quality. The SAR1 is considered one of the best Romanian AKs. It is also a Century import, circa 2003.

Just handled 200 new AKs of Bulgarian manufacture. Not impressive, not for function (full or semi-auto), not accuracy, not workmanship.

I have owned semi auto AK clones since the early 1980's, I have a few now, shoot them regularly and am on the AK Files more than I am on the S&W Forum.

Atlantic Firearms is a fine place to look around for what is available and a fine outfit to buy from.

AK 47 Rifle -WASR 10- SALE - AtlanticFirearms.com

WASR's from Romania are a very good starting place, foreign made AK's from ex Warsaw pact countries are always better than US made AK clone's, no US made clone is recommended. Now there can be some decent rifles made from real AK parts kits with US receivers and barrels.

WBP from Poland has some nice rifles these days

WBP AK47 Jack J762P-NEC Rifle - AtlanticFirearms.com

As does FB Radom from Poland

Beryl Rifle -762 - AtlanticFirearms.com

Stay clear of the rifles from Pioneer from Poland.

Skip the Romanian and get a Yugo/Serbian O-PAP or the newer Z-PAP. They have the heavier/thicker receiver and the RPK style trunions. Much better quality IMO. The Yugo is more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

The difference between the OPAP and the ZPAP is the Z has a chrome lined barrel. If the weapon is cleaned and maintained, it doesn't matter- imo. I have the OPAP. Very accurate with the M67 Yugo surplus ammo.

All that being said IF I were In the market for a Romy AK, I'd get the under folder version

I do have a Romy AK version, the AES-10B an RPK clone.

I had a Romanian SAR-1 for a few years in the early 2000's. I shot the Dickens out of it and never had a problem with it. It was accurate enough, about the same as my .30-30 lever guns at 100 yards.

I didn't particularly like the ergonomics of the AK design and ended up selling it for about twice what I paid for it new.

Most all semis of any configuration and caliber sometimes have a FTF or a FTE. It's just the nature of a semi.

Obviously, ammo has an impact as well.

I bought a SAR-1 at a gun show in about 2004 and have shot it every year since. Initially I used Wolf ammo or other Russian stuff, but then started to reload my own with home cast lead boolits.

I have NEVER had an instance when the SAR-1 failed to deliver a round to the target. It's the only 100% rifle I ever owned.

Obvioulsly, YMMV.

The early WASR-10s were a bit of a lottery. Canted sights were the main complaint. They quickly got better.

I have a WASR-10 that I got in a deal with someone who wanted my 20" Saiga to make a fake RPK. Loved that deal. The Saiga was drastically overgassed, and the WASR was much better set up. My WASR came with a US trigger that is very nice.

It's a piston op rod system like an m-14 and many other previous US designs except the m-16 or or m-4, which was recently replaced by the XM-7 piston rifle. No doubt the AK-47 piston/op rod system was copied from the M-1. Reliable and with stamped parts easy to manufacture. There are probably more AK-47's in the world than all other battle rifles combined.

I've never owned one, but then I've never owned an AR either.

I thought all AK type platforms were fitted with USA triggers to comply with import rules.

The most common Romanian origin AK is the "WASR-10", sold by Century Arms. My recollection is they are mid-level in AK world.

I picked up my used Century Arms Romanian Cugar WASR-10 a few years ago at a local gun store for a good price. I made a few improvements (refinished wood, upgraded muzzle brake, pistol grip, butt pad, a few internal parts upgrades, etc.), and it's been an excellent shooter. The only problem now is that 7.62x39 ammo is getting more difficult to find and more expensive since Russian ammo imports were banned. BTW, IMO a very good YouTube website for all things AK is "AK Operators Union, Local 47-74".

I bought my SAR-1 directly from Century. At that time they were selling steel cased Russian ammo for dirt cheap prices. It enticed me to bur a couple cases of the stuff. Still have some left. But I also cast .30 cal lead boolits, so I handload it as well.

With the prices of ammo these days, handloading makes sense for every single caliber.
