So I was coming back from testing out that Astra (excellent shooter btw) and I couldn't help but swing by my LGS.

And I saw it.

A 3" 686-6+. Seven rounds, used but never fired, sitting there alone. For $769. Lockup is tight, the sights are straight, and the pawl and cylinder look good. No turn line yet.

I had taken the my Colt 1911 out alongside the Astra, mostly because I don't carry it a lot. 1911s just don't stick with me for some reason. But at my LGS, this is an opportunity.

Guns were traded, I need a new holster. I still have a 1917 and a Rock Island 1911 to shoot off my stash of .45ACP; but tbh, I completely prefer the wheel gun even to JmB's masterpiece.
How did I do?

I also found an old JC Higgens Model 50 rifle (a Sears-marked FN commercial .30-06) that I'm putting on layaway for myself, with an eye toward trading my Mini 14 for it and some cash.

They've also got a very nice High Standard Flite King riot shotgun that was tempting, but I don't need it….

Edit: I got it

You did very good, but I believe you have a 2-1/2" bbl! I picked up my used 3" Model 686-6 Plus last year for $750 OTD, and was extremely happy to get it! Except for S&W's "3-5-7" laminated stocks, it's one of my favorite revolvers for OWB carry...extremely accurate and very manageable recoil. The stocks are too small for my hands and uncomfortable to shoot. I've got some Hogue Tamers which are much better, but I'm going to look for some nicer wood stocks. The holster is from 1791 Gunleather in Miami...very well made and easy on the wallet. Enjoy!

I really like my 686-6 7shot. It does have a 5" barrel and is a Pro Series. Action is pretty slick. It is currently wearing Hogue Mono Grip and Hi Viz F.O. front sight.Bob

Have you seen what Mini-14s are bringing now days?

Besides that, Minis are pretty cool.

And if you ever have to use one, you'll get off more readily per James Reese (YouTube gun guy/lawyer) if you use a Mini-14 than an AR.

Do what you want, but I'll always have a Mini-14 around.

I also recently bought a 3" 686-6+. Mine was ordered new, so you can see what you saved. I like mine quite a bit (although the extractor rod and the screw that holds the cylinder latch like to loosen during extended shooting.). It's pretty accurate, or at least as accurate as I can shoot it. I did change the stocks and carry mine in a JM Custom Kydex AIWB holster. Obviously, a lot bigger than my J Frame but it still makes for a good companion.

I agree that yours may be shorter than 3". I see a difference in the bulk of the extractor rod housing and the space around the writing on the barrel (which, of course, you can't see in my photo...). Regardless, may you never use yours in anger.

Thanks! Measured it and it is indeed a 2.5" barrel.

I need to find a holster for it; AIWB or IWB, probably leather? I want to make it a part of the carry rotation.

I'll eventually slide some wood grips on there, but I like the way the rubber grips feel too.

I did trade off the Mini, ended up with a High Standard 12 gauge and that FN Mauser. I'm happy with it…way I see it, if I'm just burning target rounds, that's what .22LR is for, and I've got .30-30 and .30-06 rifles for more potent shooting.
