Help identifying SW revolver

Please help identifying this SW model. Found it cleaning out grandpas stuff, no caliber or model markings that I can find and grandpas not around anymore to answer questions.

I suspect this is an M&P model from the early 1940's and probably chambered for .38 Special.

Either the barrel has been swapped for a short one, or the original barrel was cut short and a front sight mated to it.

Interesting… or funny and not exactly wonderful that the end of the ejector rod actually sits forward of the muzzle.
 
With that serial number, it is almost certainly an altered BSR. Truckman's observation does throw a wrinkle into what the alterations actually were. Some sort of barrel replacement or rod replacement is most likely. The barrel has been cut regardless.
