Would appear to be a Model 29 with the 8 3/8" barrel. Really have no idea of what engineering change. However, if the stocks are original to the gun, the speed loader relief appeared in the early 80's, and the barrel isn't pinned, so at least a 29-3.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Post a serial number or at least the front half with the back half xx'd out and we can attempt to date it or get near.

Here's a sticky that might help you do so from the FAQ's, and will hopefully at least give you enough info to help us with your search:

Thanks.

I am guessing 29-3 early 1980s. I had his twin back then.

I prefer the four inch to carry and for BBQs. The six inch for out in the field for camping, hiking and hunting. My eight 3/8 inch was just a range gun for testing my reloads. Yours appear o be in good shape with the original S&W grips on it.
