Our local newspaper said today that the Iowa legislature is considering letting a private citizen buy a full auto weapon, short barrel rifles and shotguns. The full auto part pertains to guns made before 1984. One purchase per person's life time. Hope this passes. Always wanted a WW2 Thompson.

Wonder why the limits? I think the machine gun registry was closed in 89, what do they have against those made from 84 to 89? One per lifetime? I guess 1 is better than 0, but the logic escapes me.
It was closed in mid 80s. 89 was a different ban.

I know in PA you can have as much as you want provided you can afford them.

Full Auto Weapons

I had my chance to bring home from Nam, a full auto and I politely told the officer "no way". People don't understand that when you have a weapon like that and show it to someone, they will share that info with other folks and the next thing you know, someone wants to steal it and possibly harms you in the process. Think long and hard before making such a purchase.

Well, I haven't had that experience, and neither have any of my friends who own class III forearms. I have owned several of them, (currently have an AK and an M16 as well as a sound suppressor for the M16) since the 1980s, and have never had any attempt made to steal them. I don't advertise that I own them, but it is not a secret either. I am unaware of any thefts of Class III firearms here in WV. Our state law has always permitted any of this class of firearms as long as federal requirements are met.

Well, Tom, my point is that the same could be said of almost any firearm. Or anything of value, for that matter. If folks want something, and can afford it, and it is legal to own, I don't see why they should be fearful to own it because someone might want to steal it. Actually mine are not worth as much as some of my friends, who own things like Thomson SMGs, which are a whole collectable field in themselves, and worth far more than mine.

Naturally, as with any firearm, adequate security, proper storage and so forth are a necessity, for safety as well as security.

That rationale can be used if you buy anything "nice." Don't get your wife jewelry, and if you do don't let her wear it in public! Don't buy a nice car! Just move into your bunker, and don't come out unless you look like a homeless person, just in case someone might think you have something "nice."

I won't live that way because that isn't living.
