Those aren't Black Talon rounds, the brass is only discolored.
BTW, the Black Talon never really went away, Winchester only removed the Black coloring on the bullet.

all 50 rounds have a black coating on the bullet...i took 1 round and dipped it in brasso and it DID NOT come off like when you dip a tarnished bullet in brasso it and it brings back the shine....i have a true box of Black Talon and it is the same bullet just a nickel case not brass..........called the LGS and they have 2 more boxes that are the same way,,,,,,,,,,,,,,with that said i am still not sure what i have.......
pic of same ammo that someone is selling on a auction sight

Winchester SXT "BLACK TALON"?????
I have the same rounds and if I recall correctly, I obtained them when W-W discontinued selling Black Talon to non-LEO's due to media attention on the panned black bullet.
These rounds were marketed to LE distributors only? This was many years ago, perhaps 20? Can't recall for sure, I still have several boxes.

Ranger SXT . . . . . . . . . . . . . I remember it well.
Ranger SXT is one of Winchester's Law Enforcement lines of ammunition.
The Black Talon projectile was originally designed in 1991. It had one of the first pre-scored jackets in the industry. The jacket also had a reverse taper which is what enabled the Talons to remain perpendicular to the wound channel. The projectile was coated in Lubalox to protect the firearms rifling and reduce copper fouling. Lubalox is the trade name for Winchester's black oxide coating process.
In 1993 Winchester voluntarily removed Black Talon ammunition from the market due to media pressure.
The company had this wonderful new bullet design and I would guess a stockpile of black projectiles. . . . . . so Ranger SXT was born. It was only sold to Law Enforcement distributors/dealers and the boxes were marked LE Only. Dealers could sell it to whomever they pleased.
The main differences between the two was that Ranger SXT was packed 50 rounds to the box and loaded into brass cases instead of nickel cases.
Around 2000 the black projectiles were phased out. A slightly redesigned SXT projectile came out but in the now familiar gold color.
BTW, the original meaning of SXT was Supreme eXpansion Talon. However this did not do well with the media and it was very quickly changed to the phrase Supreme eXpansion Technology.
Around 2008 the Ranger SXT name was changed to Ranger-T. Again at this time the projectile had a minor redesign.
2009 saw the introduction of Winchester's bonded projectile the PDX1
The 147 grain offering that you have was a GREAT load for suppressed firearms. Other 9mm offerings were a 124 grain +P and a 127 grain +P+.
Today the 124 grain projectile is no longer in the lineup and the 127 is now only loaded to +P pressure

I still have a box of the Black Talons, should I hold on to em, or shoot em. I have and old box of Winchester Ranger 10ga paper shells from 37, supposed to be worth around $100.

Looks like you have Black Talon to me. I have both the Ranger and some Black Talon. My Ranger is brass case and shiny copper bullet.

Some people still believe the hype they were "magic killing bullets" instead of just being a well designed bullet. They would choke if they realized the same bullet is still available and an updated better is available but without the "Black" coating.

I would use them as range ammo. They are fairly old stock someone had lying about and use older technology. The SXT you have is indeed the Black Talon bullet. It was after Winchester quit selling them to the public and restricted them to LE sales only. They redesigned the bullet tweaking expansion and penetration, and to expand more reliably from short barreled guns. When they did so, they quit using the black coloring on the bullet and renamed it the T-Series. The product code for the new style bullet was/is RA9T. The new style T-series ammo is excellent ammo.
Winchester currently loads the Ranger T-Series in 124+P (RA9124TP), 127+P+ (RA9TA), and 147 (RA9T) grain loadings. They are restricted to LE sales only but can often be found online for sale to anyone.

Back when 'Black Talons' were available and the 'media craze' started,I bought some while the stuff was still inexpensive. Bought 2 boxes of 40 S&W 180 Gr. and 9 boxes of 10mm 200 Gr. Haven't shot any of it,they just sit next to the 'Super Vel' stuff and Norma 10mm ammo.

Does S&W make SXT in 357 caliber? And why did S&W discontinue the Model 65 357 Lady Smith?

Shortly after the BT was pulled , win also added 9mm127 gr +p+ ranger, it had the brass case and black bullet. I have full sets of 338 + 300 win mag, 30-06, 308 win, 44 Mag, 45 acp, 357 Mag, 40 SW,9 mm all in pristine boxes. I also have 2 boxes of Black Talon (prototype ) in sealed white boxes. I currently carry ranger in 40 SW,45 acp,380 acp all black bullet since they are the original BT bullet and do not have the petals cut square as some of the ta series had for a short while. I personally do not carry a 9mm, but the 147 BT was a good round and great subsonic, and over penetration was usually not a problem. I would carry it if a 9mm was all I had and not just use it as "RANGE" ammo. I have not tried the bonded yet. I would go back and buy the rest. Be Safe,
