Just received my first gun. S&W M10 .38 special 4" barrel

What type of ammo can I use?

I have abox of 158 LRN FP: is this OK to use?

Thanks,

Sounds as though you have one of the Cowboy (low pressure/velocity) rounds, which are fine for practice. 148 gr wadcutters, 158 gr round nose lead are also fine. There are many threads regarding defensive ammo to use...and yes, +P ammo is safe. Hope this is helpful.

The M10 while it will shoot just about any type of .38 Special bullet, was originally designed and built around the 158 Round Nosed Lead bullet. Not the best for self defense (slow velocity and lack of expansion) but is one of the most accurate, non leading, pleasant rounds to shoot.

For self defense consider one of the 158 grain Buffalo Bore, or Speer 135 grain Gold Dot offerings. They are good for their intended purposes. For plinking and target work, the 158 RNL are tops! By the way, as long as old ammo is stored in a cool dry place, it will work just fine regardless of age.

It's my opinion the best ammo for a M&P is the FBI Load. (158gr LSWC/HP .38 Special +P) I shoot that ammo in my M&P exclusively and I find that load to be extremely accurate in my revolver. It's also a time tested and street tested load that works...

From a 4" barrel you can shoot the Remington, Winchester or Federal loads because the velocity generated will allow the bullet to reliably expand. I find the Winchester load to be most accurate in my revolver but the other 2 are very close. I like the Remington load best in my M36 with a 2" barrel.
