I just purchased a MP22 that requires 22LR ammo. Is this ammo centerfire or rimfire? I would hate to buy the wrong ammo. thanks.

Mike, please take some sort of class that deals with firearms. If there is no concealed pistol classes in your area, enroll in a hunter's safety class.

Find a gun club or range to join. I've never met a gun club member that was not more that happy to spend time with a newcomer to the sport.

Welcome and good shooting.

Welcome to the forum.

I find it unusual that someone would buy a rifle without educating themselves as to what ammunition it uses. I guess a fellow has to start somewhere. Please familiarize yourself with the rules for gun safety before attempting to shoot it.

Happy shooting!

Yes. Please educate yourself, and please do it before you fire the weapon. I am not trying to be mean, but it is horribly irresponsible to go fire a weapon with the lack of knowledge you apparently have.

This. I take (drag) my wife to the shooting range with me
when i can. She is very inexperienced, but she always feels
comfortable around the members. If I'm not constantly focussing
on her then one of the guys will. Handing over their firearm and
ammo to a newcomer to the sport they love. Same thing with my
son. The atmosphere is not what many expect it to be.

Welcome!

Calling his pistol a rifle doesn't help much. :D

I have already taken 1 beginner gun class but the guns were already supplied. I have purchased a hand gun for my next class and while looking for ammo I was confused over center or rim fire. i just wanted to make sure I purchased the right ammo to bring to class.

May I recommend you spend some time on youtube reviews as well? I only did a cursory check but these two take you through the basics of the weapon, starting with un-boxing and then some use and navigation!

Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Review / GoPro HD Hero2 - YouTube

M&P 22 Pistol Review - YouTube

You bought a firearm and don't even know what ammunition it uses. Scary thought.

Mike, welcome to the forum! We all got involved with firearms at different ages and for many different reasons. I would strong suggest that you take a look at YouTube and there you will find demo after demo on using, cleaning and seeing your specific firearm up close and personal by some one that is providing their perspective. Some good some not so good. It is encouraging to see you write that you have taken a class. I would also suggest you take the NRA classes for basic pistol and rifle shooting courses. Here is the Link: NRAInstructors.org - Portal for NRA certified Instructors, NRA Education and Training Additionally, please take the time to read your firearm manual as it will explain the operation of your firearm and give you many insights! If you do not have a physical manual you will be able to get a PDF formatted one viq your manufactures website. If you do the before stated homework I just gave you, when finished you may be able to find some 22 long rifle ammo which currently is not available as the last HORRIBLE gun shooting sent a concern out that the government was going to lock down the firearm and ammo sales. My local gun range is completely out of ammo and they just added a new $3,000,000 range and building set to open this weekend!!!!Imagine that, open for business NO ammo for them to sell you. I hope the info helps you and that you will learn all about your firearm before actually using it!!!! Many have purchased a new firearm and assumed they knew how to handle it and many times there are issues. Protect yourself with knowledge and this will keep you safe and allow you to enjoy the sport of shooting!!! We all started at where you are today!!

Sounds like you are doing it right, Mike. I hope you enjoy your new firearm. Please do not be discouraged by the limited availability of 22lr ammo at this current time. I expect it is only temporary, and 22 ammo is usually very inexpensive and plentiful.

There is a great wealth of information to be had on this forum. You've joined a great place. I have learned volumes since I've been here, and met some really nice people as well.

At least he's asking questions before he makes a dreadful mistake. Kudos to him for that.

Lets not beat up on him.
Instead, how about some usable advice and/or encouragement?

I agree with the other posters - some gun safety & handling courses and some hands-on help from experienced shooters is a good idea.
Not only for safety, but also for gun maintenance & shooting form, etc.

Great question Mike, and I'm really glad you asked BEFORE you wasted money on the wrong ammo. ;)

To us that have been around guns for 40 years or so, yeah, it's a simple question and we kind of laugh, but we wouldn't laugh at a 7 year old who asked now would we? This is the same situation because Mike is just getting into guns and I am happy that he is.

You'll love the gun Mike, you may have some issues but don't be discouraged, we have all had them. Loading the mag can be frustrating but ask for tips. You may get a stovepipe with that gun, where the shell sticks straight up instead of going in the chamber. Not a big deal, just operate the slide and the next should go where it belongs.

ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction I don't care if it's unloaded, disassembled, in a case or what. Good habit to have.

And PLEASE come back and tell us how much fun you had. I wish I was there to watch ya! ;)

A few harsh comments but I welcome the feedback. I knew when I bought the gun that is was 22LR ammo, but after doing some research I noticed centerfire and rimfire being tossed around which caused a little confusion. I am totally committed to gun safety and this is why I am taking classes. Thank you for all the comments and concerns. This sight is great for all kinds of info.

Have fun and shoot well, Mike. Not trying to come down on you. Just want to be sure you know the basics. A good friend of mine kept a Springfield XD-9 in his sock drawer with one in the chamber and the magazine locked up in the safe for TWO YEARS. he didn't know the gun was loaded the whole time since he thought dropping the mag made it unloaded. God blessed him for not letting his 6 year old son find that gun and fire a shot. We ALL need to be on our toes with a deadly weapon. I had an M&P22 and really liked it, but I sold it to buy something else. For now, my .22 shooting is my Ruger 10/22.

peoria mike we all had to start somewhere when we started shooting guns so we all asked questions that someone could have said we should have known the answer. Guess what if I knew the answer I wouldn't have asked the question and I was trying to do what is right and not make a mistake.

I am a combat vet from Vietnam that saw a lot of action and I carried 3 different weapons during my year there. When I was drafted the sum total of my experience with guns was my BB gun when I was a 12 year old kid. The Army has a simple concept on training people to shoot and care for a rifle or pistol. They drill you for hours on the maintenance and care of a weapon and then they take you to a range and teach you how to shoot it. They would rather you ask a question then injure yourself or someone else in your outfit.

I say more power to you for asking the question as that is the right thing to do.

I was almost in the same position as you back in 2006. I refused to take a class or ask for any help. I was 29 and decided im a man and can figure this whole guns and ammo thing on my own. It took some time and reading and wanting to learn on my part to get it on my own. Read your manual and study your gun and its controls. Study the ammo. As others have stated watch YouTube videos. People are very helpful. You did right by coming on here and asking and don't let peoples harshness effect you. Spend time at gun stores, ranges, and fellow firearm lovers and ask as many questions as you and they are comfortable with. I don't mean to talk to you like a beginner if your not but your post makes it sound like u are.

Have fun and be safe
