I've noticed recently just about all big box outdoor stores in my are now carrying a large amount of 10mm Federal Hydra-Shok, which surprises me as that is an older round. It is also being sold at a fair price so I can get a good bit of them. I know its pretty much a light round, on level with the forty. Is it a good self-defense round for HD use?

You might want to double check the factory spec on the round before you assume it's loaded to ~1000 fps. While it's probably a pretty safe bet, you know what they say about "assume".

The Hydra Shok may be a dated design, but it worked then, it'll work now.

I like the hydra-shok. The only critter I ever shot with it was a buck and it went clean through & out the other side(45acp). I like speer's old "flying ashtray"(200 gr wide mouth HP)too. Loaded up on 45acp or LC it was devastating.

Yeah, I checked the box it runs at about 1050fps. The only other factory JHP ammo I found close by is Hornady 200 grain XTP, also running at 1050fps. Just want to make sure I don't have deer hunting ammo loaded for home defense.

JMHO- but I believe the 10 will kick the 40's butt all over the place- at least my load will. :)

In this, or my revolvers. :D

Federal may be offering a deal on the lower power load to their distributors since they have just released a full power 10MM Auto loading

A few months ago, I ran a batch of this through a G20 with every other round being hydrashok then the new trophy. There was a substantial difference in the feel of the loads.

This stuff will please any 10MM Auto fan and I consider it GREAT news that Federal is expanding it's 10MM Auto lineup.

J. R. WEEMS,
The Javelina LS is a nice piece. I have had one for what must be close to 20 years now. You are the 10MM just rocks in the longer barrels. I built this 6" last summer.

However for really great 10MM Auto performance I have this little 9" guy. Played with my first 10MM MP5 close to 25 years ago and fell in love.

Now J. R. WEEMS if you want to have real fun with those 610s, open the chambers up for the 10MM Magnum cartridge. You will get 200-300 more FPS from the same projectiles. However there is no longer any 10MM Magnum factory ammunition available.

Let all my 610 go some time back- :( still have my ruger though-- had a later version 610 I was going to convert to the mag, but Bowen insisted the barrel be engraved as such- never got around to it and sold the gun- still have a bunch of new 10MM MAG brass I bought for the project that needs to go. :) Love the looks of that SA-- I load mine with 800X- :D
