Just a quick heads-up when purchasing ammo at Walmart, or anywhere. One of the stocking clerks at my local Walmart is stealing one round of ammo out of the boxes. It's happened to me three times on three different occasions, and all three times I have been guilty of not looking carefully at the end flaps of the boxes before the purchase. The flaps on cardboard ammo boxes are designed to not open easily and when they have been opened it's pretty easy to see. It happened to me for the third and final time today. I will be visiting the store manager tomorrow. Yes, its only three rounds (.45 and 9 MM) but I wonder how many boxes this thief has pilfered? And it has to be an employee because all of the ammo is under lock and key.

A lot of Walmart ammo is kept in a back room. I don't think they have cameras there.

I don't have inside knowledge on Walmart specifically but I'd think they have cameras everywhere, especially covering the stockroom. Employee theft is no small amount. Even a place like Value Village has cameras in the employee only areas. Almost every retail establishment I've done computer or register upgrade work does.

I would ask if the ammunition is on open display or in a locked case? If it is open then why would you suppose a clerk or stocker was responsible? And it s easy to open a cartridge box without any evidence being left.

FWIW, this sort of thing is epidemic, it happens everywhere firearms related products are sold. At the LGS I frequent I have found several boxes of ammunition that were short and given them to the department clerk. Likewise two empty bullet mould boxes, loading die sets that had missing dies, etc. They do have cameras too! They have even taken to stapling the bags of bulk bullets and fired brass closed in an attempt to reduce the "shrinkage".

I check every box of center fire ammo that I purchase even if the flaps are sealed at the factory. I had a box of WW.45 acp here a while back that had a single .40 bullet in the box. I showed the guy and got another box and checked it. I check them all if I am buying by the box instead of multi paks.

That happened before it hit the front of the store. If you use a fat finger to pull open an end flap, you will notice it. Use a pocketknife blade to pry one open and there will be no telltale sign. Perfect clean smooth cardboard.

Sounds like the voice of experience

(hope you realize I'm just kidding :D)

ALL the ammo at ALL the local Walmarts is always locked in a case. Also, when you request a certain box, the clerks take them out and personally take them to the register. They don't give you the ammo until the purchase is completed and in the bag. In the future, I will be requesting to inspect the boxes before purchase. I think they will comply.

True. One time the clerk opened the case to get a box of ammo out for another customer. She realized that I was going to buy as well so she left the case open while she stepped over to the register to ring the other guy up. So I took my box out of the case and walked over to the register. When I put the ammo on the counter she launched into a rant about not getting the ammo myself. I mean, she was really rude about it. Then she made a point of questioning me to make sure I understood the purchase price of the ammo, as if I was a homeless guy asking to test drive a Mercedes. I probably should have asked for the manager to let him/her know that his employee had left the ammo cabinet unsecured and was rude, but instead I just glared at the clerk and said "Your welcome!"

I ALWAYS check the boxes, sealed or not, before purchase. I have found boxes with missing rounds, rounds other than the caliber on the box (40 S&W in a 45 ACP box...yep, Winchester white box), and even got a box where someone took out the factory rounds and replaced them with VERY BAD reloads! (Yes, this was at WalMart and it involved 9mm in Winchester white box).

Go figure......

Stories like this make me appreciate the fact that Remington seals their box flaps...

It also makes me glad of the fact that I rarely buy ammo anymore.

I've seen more than one post elsewhere about this and finding a few wrong caliber rounds in a box.

I don't buy my ammo at Walmart. In fact, since I live in the desert, I just walk out my back door, pick up some rocks and use the nifty sling shot that I have had since I was a wee lad.

(Tongue in cheek guys and gals.)

I would check out the local ranges in the evening and see who is shooting one round from his pocket, then leaving.

Great Idea! However, I'll have to be very observant due to the fact that he will have at least two guns, a 9mm and .45!
