A Better Defense Round?
I own a 5906 with 2 magazines. One is loaded with my home defense round, Hornady 115 gr. FTX Critical Defense. I am sure there is some kind of shelf life on ammo and these rounds have been in one magazine for quite a while. The only time I remove them is when I target shoot, in which I use a cheap FMJ round in both magazines.
I am looking for suggestions, opinions, and/or advice on a new defense round because I want to shoot these during target practice. That, or, just buy some new FTX ammo?

The article referenced in this thread ( The Best Caliber for your concealed carry gun ) kinda suggests 124gr +P JHP, but if you like FTX, just find someone that has it at a good price and order more.
There's no real one best brand.

I finally got a hold of my cousin, whom has an FFL, and asked his opinion. He uses the PDX1 147 grain in his Sig Sauer. He also stated that Sig Sauer has a great home defense round.
Elite Performance Ammunition
I am going to try the Winchester PDX1 124 grain round during my next target practice session.
When I was younger my cousin and I used to shoot Black Talon and Winchester Ranger SXT ammo.

There really is no shelf life for ammo assuming they weren't out in the elements for months on end. If there is a shelf life it's likely to be long after we are gone. I'm still shooting ammo made from the 30s to the 80s
I prefer Gold Dot 124. Also use Ranger 124

A lot of good loads out there but.................
a lot depends on how you FEEL about the load and if.......
you think it is the BEST load for you and your weapon.
POSITIVE thinking in a SD moment is a great thing.
You don't need to be thinking, couda, wooda, shooda.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for this at WM? I just wanted to see if WM's prices are the same everywhere.

My pick is currently Corbon DPX, but I would feel fine carrying just about any of high quality modern ammunition from the big name manufacturers.

Whatever you get I'd make sure it's in 50 round boxes aimed at the LE market so you aren't paying inflated prices. Most of the loads listed in post 4 are available in 50 round boxes.

DocGKR on the Sig ammo:
"I was not impressed with this type of ammo when we shot it..."
"It offers inconsistent performance that is outside the normal standards in every respect, including poor barrier capability."

Nevada Ed has a good point there, you have to have confidence in yourself and the ability to shoot your choice of handgun. In say 9mm and up it really don't matter much what you hit em with as long as it's placed well.

I agree! Shot placement is the most important factor when opposed by the bad guys.

I've run into ammo only forty or fifty years old that was bad, but the storage was suspect. Plenty of ammo fifty or more years old that is perfectly good. If it looks bad, it's practice ammo. Otherwise, I'd test a few rounds and not sweat postwar (WWII) ammo. Of course, it's usually best to shoot the oldest stuff first.

Perhaps I misunderstood (even happens to me!), but with a semi-auto, I would not unload and then re-load the same defensive rounds in the magazine in order to fire practice ammo. Many police departments have their officers shoot up the ammo they've been carrying and issue fresh after qualification.
