22 mag info request
I have been shooting the Troy Landry CCI 22 mag ammo with mixed results. Either it is right on or way off. I would say that 20% of my rounds are really off target. The gun is clean, but I can't explain it. I realize that different ammos work better than others in some guns. Can someone recommend a brand?
I am shooting a 648 6 inch S&W. Sellier&Bellot is out per an earlier" post.

Odd, that. I've always had good luck with CCI .22 Magnum and the Troy Landry stuff in .22 LR. My only .22 Magnum is a KelTec PRM 30. CCI is one of the brands recommended for that pistol.
Give us a bit more information, please. Are the 20% "really off" rounds randomly distributed in ammo boxes or is it all from one box? Or lot number? How many total rounds have you fired to arrive at the 20%? If all these off rounds are from one box, I wouldn't give up on CCI given my good experience with the brand.

Another PMR 30 shooter here. iMO, CCI with bullets 40 grains or heavier are the best chance of finding an accurate round, at least I'd start with those. I'd think the Speer Gold Dots would work well too but those are hard to find and rather pricey as well.

I've found Winchester 22mag ammo to be the most accurate in my rifle. I've also found it completely unavailable for the last couple of years.
Here's proof it did once exist.

Been using the CCI 40 grain in both my rifles. Was a bit surprised that the Gamepoints do print differently than the H.P. even with the same grain bullet. These days gotta get whats on the shelf often if out of our favorite brand. My Ruger American 22 mag. compact groups fantastic with the H.P. from CCI. Pretty nice gun overall and HANDY

Have fired nearly 300 rounds from each of 2 different batches and keep getting flyers 8-12 inches at 20 yards. Benched and 2 handed. Single action. 20% was just an estimate of flyers, but not unusual to have 2 out of 6 rounds go astray. Maybe I am just a lousy shot although I shoot much better with my 686 and 657 during the same shooting trip!

CCI and W-W 40gr loads have proven to perform best in my High Standard derringers and NAA mini revolver. The Hornady Critical Defense, which one would think be ideal in such guns, would regularly keyhole at 3 yards.

I have owned two M 48s and neither one was spectacularly accurate across the board. They both did best (not great) with CCI 40 gr. solids. That indicates to me that the rifling twist might be a tad slow in general. I then started adding a 22 Mag cylinder to my M 617s and as I have said before was startled by the outstanding accuracy coming out of both 4" and 6" barrels. The rifling twist might be a little tighter and the 0.001" smaller barrel diameter must come into their own with the 22 Mag cartridges. I get outstanding accuracy with all the Mag ammo I have tried with a slight edge to the Winchester Supreme 36 gr. HPs. That is nice because IMHO it is also a great self defense round for 22 Mags. I sold one of my M 48s and have hung onto the 4" bbl. just because it is appreciating so fast. ..............
BTW: I really have considered carrying a M 617 with a 3" bbl. as my EDC self defense gun, but trying to hang on to what little hearing I have left has convinced me to keep carrying my M64 that I converted to 357 Mag and round butted it. There is something about the sound level of the 22 Mag out of short barrels that approaches that of the 22 Jet. Both are hearing damage waiting to happen if shot with no ear protection.

I found Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 40 Grain hp was the best round in my NAA Pug. Much like Kaaskop49 I had mixed results with Hornaday Critical Defense 45 Gr FTX rounds. Most of the time they would keyhole.

Just find an OEM duplicate to your original cylinder and get someone to rechamber it to 22 Mag after it is fitted to your frame. ........

I understand what you're saying, but if you ever need to use the gun, I would think the sound level wouldn't be one of the important things. Besides, if you can't hear the questions, the nice officer who tries to question you won't get any usable answers. The other guy will be deaf and bleeding. Maybe suffering burns as well. Just shoot him and don't worry.

+1 with post #5
Winchester was the most accurate ammo in my single six revolver, that I shot many, many years ago. I gave it to
my son-in-law and I have no idea of what ammo he uses in it now.
It was LOUD and accurate some times...............with its 6" barrel.
Just glad that it came with the 22 LR cylinder.

A suggestion...number your cylinders and always start with #1 for each group you shoot. Shoot 5 six round groups on 5 targets and check to see where EVERY round lands on each target. If you find that every time you get to chamber #3 and one goes out of the group then you will know you have a gun not an ammo problem...

+1 on the above post.
I have pink finger nail polish on my revolver cylinders for the
best chamber for dead on accuracy for a single shot if in the field, meat hunting.
Good post, sir.
