I went to Cabela’s today to by some 9mm ammo. My intention was to get WWB 500 round pack. It’s $99.99 and I had a 10% off coupon plus my military discount. Well they were all out of wwb in the 500 round pack but they did have Herters 500 rd pack for 99.99, or $9.99 per box. Having a discussion with the ammo guy at Cabela’s I find out Herters in no longer made by Sellior and Beloit but is now made by Winchester here in The USA. The rounds look the same but are boxed in all new designed boxes. Has anyone else heard this ? I have been unable to verify it looking online.

I went to the Greenville SC Cabela's recently looking for more of the Herters 158gr FMJ .38/.357 that I've been plinking with for quite a while. There was only one Herters handgun caliber on the shelves, and not what I wanted.

I asked about the Herters situation and was told the S&B contract was not renewed and they were just liquidating remaining Herters stock. He added that a special purchase agreement now existed with Federal, and that prices on some of the Federal family of ammo should come down, at least occasionally, to the price point previously seen with Herters.

The regular priced American Eagle 158gr JSP .357 on the shelf was priced lower than before, and may lower to Herters prices if on sale. I hope so, since the AE JSP is a favorite round.

I don't remember where I read it but Herter's is now Cabela's in-house brand ammo. I don't remember if the article said who is now making the ammo for them.

I have had good results with that ammo in the past.

If Winchester or Federal picked up the ball............
it should be as good, just hope they keep the fps about the same
since it feed in all my 9's.

I have used the Herters 9mm rounds frequently in my PC Shield and full size MP with very good results. Usually picked up cheap with using up Cabelas coupons and points. I knew the boxes i went thru were from SB but haven't picked up any lately to notice any difference.

I was at Cabelas today and if you buy the 350 count 9mm box the price goes down to $9.49/box or 50. I picked one up for my son, good deal...

When Cabelas bought the Herters name, they had several ammo companies put the Herters name on their ammo. I know some of the rifle ammo was Russian steel case.

What is the headstamp on Herters pistol ammo? I don't recall ever seeing it in range pickups.

I had some Herters 9mm that I got on a trade with a pistol. It was the dirtiest ammo I ever shot also jammed and had several duds. I don't think it was S&B. Also saw some in smaller box in plastic 50rd tray that was ok
in all departments. It looked like it may be S&B, I still have box from it.

Back in the 60s Herters really was a company with many mail order
products. Is there really any thing other than a name to Herters today?

The Cabelas in OKC has not had a military discount for a long time. They told me since Bass Pro bought it that it was stopped.

Even though I reload I bought a box of their 9mm just to give it a try and it shot clean for me and was accurate enough in my 9mm 1911. Unfortunately I lost 12 or the 50 cases in the grass! Hate that... lol

Interesting information about the change which I was unaware.

I actually found some 9mm Herters spilled on the ground in an alley. Looked new and was definitely not reloads.

Took it to the range and found that it was some very hot ammo!

Compared favorably to some old loads I used to make with lots of Bluedot.:)

The only recent "Herters" I have direct experience with is 380 cartridges. About 5 years ago several companies(Ruger and S&W) produced some 'baby' 380 pistols. The Herters 380 would not fire in some of these guns. I don't recall details but as I struggled with that ammo at our club another fellow and his wife came by and he was cussing Herters 380 for not firing. It really matters who made the stuff and the 380 looked like Wolf 9mm looks.

Yeah, I've had bad luck with S&B .380 ammo. It just doesn't function reliably. The Herter's is or at least was manufactured for Cabelas by S&B. The same parent company owns S&B and Magtech. Strangely, though, the Magtech .380 has always done well for me.

That's because the CBC Group runs Magtech as a wholly owned subsidiary which has nothing to do with S&B ammo.
