Q4204 Winchester 110gr.357 mag
Hello all!
I had the pleasure of shooting these (pictured below) from a batch of ammo that I got from a gun purchase.
I dislike firing anything that I didn't know where it came from and how it got there. Or reloads from someone. But it was about $300 worth of ammo (by my estimate) and the ammo did look uniform and factory.
So, I chose these to shoot first. They didn't have much recoil, very loud, white flash-no smell. Very clean. Accurate. I didn't chrono. But anyway, I just noticed that they came weatherized. Something I hadn't noticed before. But I opened another box and they looked the same.
Can someone confirm that these aren't reloads? And factory. I've been trying to scrutinize the rounds but my sights a little fuzzy right now.
Well. Any help appreciated. And thanks.
Lou
P.s. first time I think I've shot factory 357's in 10 years. I mainly reload.

I personally don't know a reloader that lacquer seals their primers. Joe

If you look at the top picture. The sealer looks like its applied messy. On one of them, the "3" is red.
If anyone remembers that this is how they look, I'll be good.
I dont think I'll blow the top strap on the second box.

They look new to me. I've purchased plenty of factory ammo with sealed primers and they often look a little "sloppy."
Back when I had a 3" 65 I used to shoot quite a bit of WWB 110gr SJHP. It looks the same as what you have there, from what I remember. Very nice load. Low recoil, but produced quite a fireball. Lots of fun at the range. IIRC, velocity was somewhere around 1250fps, making it equivalent to 9mm 115gr +P. Wouldn't be my first choice for a self defense load, but it probably wouldn't be my last choice, either.

Ok.
Yes. Low recoil. And bang!
Sounds good! I'm not gonna be too worried then. The messy sealants kind of threw me off a bit.
Thank you

Love the way it looks
OH I miss the good old days when White Box ammunition came in nickel plated casings
It looks good to me Lou, but just to be on the safe side, ship it to Florida and I will test fire each round for you and then return it
The last batch that I chronographed was running around . . . .
1200 FPS averaged from five 2 1/2" 19/66 revolvers
1400 FPS from a 6" Model 27
Over 1600 FPS from my 12" Mare's Leg
But this was the newer brass cased ammunition

That is some of my favorite ammo. 110-grain Q4204.
My first revolver (still have it) a Ruger GP100.
IMO there is modern ammo (better for defense) than the Q4204. BUT the Q4204 is still a GREAT LOAD !
I've got several 'new' boxes here, Lot 30HF12 = August 2012.
A partial box of Lot 33FB700 = February 2012.
A box of fired cases, Lot 28UE21 = May 2003.
The above three lots have Styrofoam inserts. And brass cases, but I do recall previous ammo had the nickle cases (like yours). I've got some older boxes somewhere but can't find them right now, I'm sure they have nickle cases.
The boxes you pictures are a different style. Check the inside flap on one end for the date code, either stamped or inked.

That just reminded me that, IIRC, the ones I shot were brass-cased.

Looks factory to me. I still have a few boxes that have been sitting around for decades. I wouldn’t recommend shooting it in “scandium”/titanium revolver. The short bullet/high pressure can cause serious damage to the gun.

That is not reloaded ammo. That is how Winchester used to package their USA brand "white box" ammo. Many years ago this was my ammo of choice when carrying a S&W Model 640-1.

That style bullet matches the standard old style SJHP Winchester 110 gr bullet, that is still made to this day.
Being in a Winchester type case makes me believe that it is factory run ammo, as well as the red primer sealer.
I did not notice any "wear marks" on the cases from firing or being run up a sizing die with those picture and my old eyes.
Good shooting.

They look like new factory ammo to me. I don't think a handloader would re-use those boxes. Too much work lining up the rounds to make them fit right so the box will close properly. I'd trash them and use the plastic ones, factory boxes with styro or plastic inserts, or just a ziplock bag.

This is true! I'm much too impatient to try and just sit there, and try and line them up. Your right.
A handful of test rounds, maybe a ziploc. Or half a box with a close able lid. Or maybe a repurposed 20 round box with a messy note /bullet weight powder grains in it.

Sealed primers - Very common practice by the Win/Rem/Fed back in the day when quality mattered first rather than cost cutting measures.

I have 22 nickel plated rounds left in my one old box dated 45HN02 (Translate please?). But no lacquer.
I carry this round in my EDC 3" 60-10. I like this round because it does have a lower recoil for 357, and still opens fairly well.

Nice to see that I'm not the only shooter who likes and carries these rounds in his magnum snubs, that is, the ones with STEEL cylinders. I use the modern-day brass colored rounds for practice. Seems that every time I check my supply to try to answer an ammo ?, I find something I didn't know I had anymore. Not a bad feeling.
