Aguila Super Extra 22LR-Seems good but stinkey
Went to the range today. First time since Covid. Took .22's as I didn't want to shoot up center fire ammo I have on hand.
Took some Aguila Super Extra 22LR 40gr round nose ammo that I picked up on black Friday special. Again I wanted to conserve my CCI Mini-Mags on hand. Used in Remington 572 Pump, Marlin Model 39A and S&W Model 63. Seems to be very accurate and reliable ammunition. No misfires, etc. Only downside is that it has an odd, foul odor when fired. No like other 22 ammo I have shot. Also as I mention in another post it had more wax coating than CCI. Hard to eject from the Model 63. Never had that problem with CCI or other domestic brands.
Anyway it was a great day here in SW Va. Temps in the mid-60's, sunny and good to get out!

TrailBoss has a unique smell. Hmmm.
But you'd have to stack it like Pringles in a 22 LR case.

Not good News for me - Speaking as a 22 Shooter who has never shot any but has 1,500 rounds out in the garage.
I posted in the other thread about just the other day buying 500 Rounds-
It was this 500 rounds!

I've shot a bunch of Aguila 22LR (other calibers, too for that matter). It's almost as good in my book as CCI standard velocity or mini mags depending on which variety you choose or can find. The smell is unique and may be due to the Eley priming they use. Not sure, though, I haven't fired any Eley in many years. Very reliable and accuracy is on par with CCI.
Looks like in your picture they are not using Eley priming any more, so maybe not. It's been awhile since I bought 22. Still have many thousands of rounds on hand.

I agree Aguila has a very distinct smell when fired. Wonder what they put in the powder down there in Mexico?
I find it also to be accurate and reliable as most other 22 ammo at that price. My last Aguila purchase in November I got two 500 round loose pack boxes for $30 each.
My last range trip I put about 250 rounds through my Ruger Single Ten and S&W SW22 Victory with one FTF. Reloaded it and it fired.

That's it. The 250 round bulk pack. The smell is like the rounds have flatulence! Good thing I was at an outdoor range. Very accurate however. As another said, seems to be on par with Mini-mag as far as accuracy.

Back during the Great Ammo Shortage of 2014, I bought some Aguila rounds out of desperation. They do smell "different", but they shoot very well. I had no problems shooting them with my then cranky (and since fixed) Ruger Standard. If your sense of smell is not super-sensitive, they should work just fine. Just keep your mask on!

A little dirty too, but seem to function well, and as you noted, most of their offerings reasonably accurate. I think the sooty deposits may in part be due to the other thing you mentioned.....excess wax lubricant.

The smell comes from their priming compound which is very reliable by the way. Misfires are very rare.

Not always true. I bought a batch of Aguila some years ago that had more misfires than any .22 ammo I've used. Perhaps I got a bad batch. However, with most cheap ammo and bulk stuff you can expect a round now and again that doesn't fire with the first trigger pull. I prefer to spend just a little bit more and get something like CCI SV that shoots a bit more accurately, always fires, and function reliably in semi-autos.

The smell is not all that unpleasant. Just worry about long term health consequences breathing it. I try to use it during a crossing breeze.
Guess we could shoot wearing our flu masks
Good news/ bad news: I’m sitting on big stacks, that and obtainable 38 reloads is all that’s keeping me shooting.

The good news is, if you're shooting in an indoor range, and need to break wind due to eating White Castle or Taco Bell before your range trip, the guy in the next lane won't be able to tell.

Aguila is good ammo. Keep shooting it, the smell grows on you, kind of like it does with Hoppes No. 9 ...
Keeps the mosquitoes away too!

Once upon a time I found and bought some Aguila .22 LR ammunition. It was a match made for my beloved Model 18. Fully the equal of CCI Mini-Mags which I have doted on since I started shooting ... way back in 1979. Thank God when ammo was available, I was able to afford to buy a good quantity of quality .22 LR ammo. The Aguila was and is some of the best. Sincerely. bruce.

I noticed the same thing about the aguila and always wondered if anyone else thought it stunk, literally not figuratively. It does shoot well in everything I have though. Last year while everything was cheap and plentiful I picked up 3 bricks for $20 each at a gun show

I've tried Aguila before and never could get it to work reliably in my guns. Always a few failure to fires.
All I could find recently was the Aguila Super Extra so I bought a few boxes just in case I couldn't find any .22s.
Turns out to be some great ammo. No failures after 500 rounds and groups on par with my normal fodder. I now have 5 boxes and will use it for practice ammo. I'm still skiddish about using it in a match but I'm giving it a new chance.

That stuff is some of my favorite ammo. Yea it smells different .... but so did girls back when I was a kid.
As far as being hard to eject, there are issues with the S&W 22 revolvers. It's a common practice to ream out the cylinders. I did my Model 34 and it made all the difference in the world. There's threads on here about that.

I shoot bullseye rimfire, and I can always tell if someone is shooting Eley or Aguila. But they sure are reliable.

Exactly right. Aguila uses the same priming compound as Eley.
I've used Aguila SV in bullseye competition for years after I did some careful testing and found it to be every bit as reliable and accurate as CCI SV in my Walther GSP Expert, and a good bit less expensive. However, it wasn't powerful enough (apparently) to cycle reliably in my wife's gun, a Walther KSP (basically a fancied-up IZH-35, and about as common as unicorns).

This is a very common problem with Aguila SV - reliable functioning in a semi-automatic. The CCI SV will generally work in everything even if it costs a little more. As for accuracy, the difference is often small and may not be enough to worry about depending on shooter, the gun, and purpose.
Several years ago, I fired five, five-shot, fifty yard groups with a couple of good quality, non-target type bolt-action rifles using around twenty-five ammos. I used cheap stuff and up, but no expensive target ammo. The Aguila SV averaged .83" for ten groups while CCI SV did .67". For reference, Aguila HV averaged .77" and Federal Auto Match (one that many like to criticize) came in at .68".
The above figures are no indication that your results would be the same as cheaper ammo does not have the batch-to-batch consistency of the higher priced ammo and never will. However, CCI SV seems to be more consistent than many of the others and I certainly wouldn't call it expensive.

I have had very good luck with the Aguila.
Never noticed the smell, but then I shoot muzzleloaders ( flintlock and percussion ) a lot.

The name escapes me, but during a shortage a few years back, picked up some Philippines - made .22 LR HV ammo. (Armscor, IIRC)
What was strange, the individual boxes in the brick held 40 rounds each, and the brick was 400 rounds.
And, they did smell odd upon shooting.

My indoor range requires st. velocity ammo. It was a change in policy so it caught me short handed during the last .22 crisis. I finally found some Aquila at a gun show for a semi reasonable price.
I would say it had a "different" smell, but I didn't find it particularly objectionable. What WAS objectionable was the performance in a semi and the accuracy in any handgun.
When CCIs and Federals became available again I tossed the smelly ones into a bin for outdoor plinking use only.

Maybe the smell is bat guano? The Navy used that in their big guns powder in WWII.

They recently had a big stack of it at my LGS. I picked up 1,000 rds at 7 cents a round. I added it to my stash, but haven't shot any yet.
