I came across this article from Field & Stream about “6 Dead, Dying, and Soon-To-Be-Obsolete Handgun Cartridges.” Now, I agree with four of the six. I don’t know enough about one to truly form an opinion but I was a little surprised to see it on the list, .41magnum. And the last, completely caught me off guard, the 40S&W.

I, like others, enjoy 40 caliber pistols. They were very popular at one time and there’s a lot of people out there that own them or looking to own one. But it seems like now a days everybody wants a 9mm.

Does anyone else out there see the 40s&w round becoming obsolete?

Nope. Like you mentioned, way too many handguns and carbines out there chambered for 40. They’ll continue to make it but maybe in smaller quantities and I’m sure selection of loads won’t be as great. Just my opinion of course.

Remember that handgun cartridge popularity is a fickle thing. One piece of news can change everything. Given how things are going now days, the FBI may decide that 32 ACP is the new "ideal" law enforcement cartridge.

40 S&W is a capable round and there are a lot of pistols out there chambered in it. Check it's ballistics, it will be around for a long time

Careful, with the recommendations coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the preferred LEO round may soon be the 32 S&W Long due to it's accuracy potential and low recoil being perfect for knee shots and minimizing the risk of death for peaceful offenders!

Who said that revolvers wouldn't make a comeback!

The forty isn’t going anywhere. There are thousand and thousands of guns in circulation chambered for it, and not everyone taps out at a little recoil.

I just bought a brand new box of .44 Russians. I won’t even concede IT is obsolete!

40 is a very capable round. Packs a substantial punch (in comparison to 9mm) while still maintaining decent capacity. Love my Glock 23, its a great shooter.

40S&W is a good round, it has it's pros and cons, but still a good option.

I might agree with them about the .45 GAP; not sure about the rest of them.

Nah, I'm not a forty fan and not upset that it's fallen out of favor, but there are tons of .40s on the market and there's absolutely a big market for the ammo.

Field & Stream, the same guys who pulled all their AR-15’s and melted them?

My dogs leave piles in the yard that have more to offer than Field & Stream and their aptly-named parent company, DICK’S.

I suspect the folks who chose the "Field & Stream" name as a store brand may not be the most popular with the gun guys who write for the magazine. The two entities are not related in any way business-wise.

That said, agree the .40 S & W is not going away anytime soon.

It's funny, because guess what ammo I've seen the MOST of during this lean period? That would be .40, .32acp, and .32H&R.

While I have long solidified my disdain for the .40, there's no doubt that I am in the minority. It's got a long life ahead of it, for sure. I posted recently about just 'discovering' the .32 options. I am quite the fan of those two now.

It’s been obsolete to me for over 20 years now. Bought a Beretta 96 back in the late 90s, great gun, but really didn’t like the .40. Sold that gun, and got a 92 in 9mm, much better...

That said, .40 S&W isn’t going anywhere. Way too many guns out there in that caliber, and it was sold deep into law enforcement.

These gun rags need to write about something, they’re just doing what they do; selling ads and taking money from gun manufacturers...
