Has anyone varnished lead-tip ammo?

Heck I suppose you could put nail polish on the bullets. That is maybe like the lacquer they put on primers and case mouths to keep oil and water out of ammo anyway. So you can go to the makeup dept. and ask if they got ballistic blue or watermelon pink or camo green or whatever you like.

I would think the heat might glaze the varnish on the inside of your barrel when shot?
I wouldn't "bubuh" your ammo.

I would not varnish bullets! The varnish you apply would be short lived just thrown in a pocket. You would probably be better off with switching to JHP's for your pocket ammo or use some sort of case. Might I suggest one of the very thin and soft sunglass bags that come with a new pair of gasses. The bulk and weight of one of them is nothing, they are totally soft and flexible and have a draw string on them that is very easily opened.

Super useful thread! And it reminds me that my driver in London told tales of his deployments to Cyprus during that war, and how they would coat their rifle bullets with Brasso to cause gangrene in the wounds of their opponents. So, quite the opposite of the OP's concern: feeling that lead alone wasn't dangerous ENOUGH.

Clear Finger Nail Polish works well ...

If the wife or daughter is out of clear , just use a nice contrasting color .

Some times I color co-ordinate my outfit , finger nail's , toe nail's and bullet's for a Fashion Statement ... but don't tell my wife !

You might be over estimating the toxicity and dangers of lead ...
but if it makes you feel better ... Paint them .

Jacketed Hollow Points and don't loose any sleep over the whole thing.

Did you ever hear of fishermen getting lead poisoning from sinkers?
Yea, they're all but banned in most places now, but it seems that Condors and Ducks are the only things that have ever gotten lead poisoning from bullets and lead shot.

Stand in an indoor range most of the working day and with less than perfecto air exchange and filtration over time you most likely will test positive for a higher level of lead in your blood than the guy tasked with scraping dried gum off the sidewalk outside the building.

How much water have you taken into your body over time that was delivered thru pipes and fittings that are soft soldered together (50/50 or 60/40 Lead&Tin alloy solder).
A lot more direct contact there over a lifetime that went right into your body than a finger tip touch to a bullet tip that's for sure.

It's just the way things are. You decide where you want to live & work and what you want to do with your time.
Most things that are dangerous are pretty obvious as are how to avoid them.

I heard of a cop back in the days when they still carried spare ammo in loops that varnished his cartridges so they would look good for inspection. He was an old horse marine who had been a pimp, then a small town cop, and he liked to maintain a good appearance. Back in those days they didn’t really shoot qualifications either so those cartridges stayed in those loops for a long time. He discovered one day that those cartridges, once varnished, didn’t fit in his revolver any more. I assume if you varnish your bullets you’ll make sure they still fit?

Worried about lead in your pocket. I have an MTM Caseguard ammo wallet that holds 6 rounds 38-357, from years ago. Plastic box type. Would not be very fast compared to a speed loader. They still make a version, sort of. They sell one that holds 12 rounds now and you get a 6 round ammo wallet as a bonus. MTM W12B-38-41. Protects ammo in your pocket or wherever till needed. Lists $12.61.

Put poison dart frog secretions on the end of those bullets...you only have to wound them a little bit

Try WD-40 Dry Lube Spray. I sprayed some in a plastic dish containing 300 rounds of 22lr. Stir gently. Pour out excess. Let dry overnight.

You could, of course, but the amount of lead you might ever absorb is pretty much ZERO.
Lead dust in the air from an indoor shooting range can sometimes cause some lead ingestion problems, but it is very rare.
FYI, you can have trace amounts of lead in your bloodstream without it causing any problems at all.
You are probably exposed to many more hazardous substances every day just living your life that are worse than the amount of lead you would ever get from your situation.
