Can someone provide some history of both of these stocks, i.e. who developed them, promoted them, used them, and how the philosophies between the two stocks differed?

I seem to remember that Skeeter Skelton and Elmer Keith preferred the Ropers and Bill Jordan preferred the Troopers.

I am not sure of the history but Jordan had hugh hands I remember him from a Shot Show years ago and his hands looked like a catchers mit. Keith was a small man with no more than large hands. The Jordan stocks would cover the Smith back strap I think the preferences had to do with what fit their hand.

If i remember correctly, Jordan modified the Roper grips to fit his hands, per Skeeter Skelton.

According to Mr. Jordan's book, No Second Place Winner, he went to Walter Roper with his ideas on what he wanted in grips. Mr. Jordan and Mr. Roper worked together and came up with the Jordan Trooper grip. Mr. Jordan stated that Mr.Roper made these until Mr. Ropers death, they were then made by the late Lew Sanderson, and then Herrett's Stocks. I don't have any info on the open back strap design used by Skeeter Skelton, but a style of each are still available fro Herrett's Stocks. Hope this answers some of your questions.

I think that Keith had small hands as about all the photos that I have seen show him to have Magna style grips on his Smiths, usually in ivory.

I have been curious about the Roper stocks. Can anybody post a comparison pic of them with a set of Herrett Shooting Star grips?

I know Herretts Stocks has picture of Roper grips on their web site and also Keith Brown Grips makes Roper grips that look really nice.
