Who uses a thumb break holster for shrouded hammer revolver? I want a thumb break holster for S&W my 638, but with the shrouded hammer I don't think the regular thumb break will fit right.

I ran across this Bianchi that puts the thumb break around the back of the trigger guard instead of the hammer.

I believe that Aker, at one time made a "finger break" holster for the 640/638, very similar to the Bianchi model, and it was cheaper. I don't remember what the model was called.

Aker Leather does make one...the thumb snap is shaped a little different but it still wraps around the back of the revolver. It is the model# 137 J-2

any holster with the retention strap crossing the trigger guard will work.

Years ago someone made a holster, can't recall the maker, that used a conventional thumb break design that went over the hammer area. On the strap was a small nylon/plastic nub that went into the hammer slot behind the hammer. It worked pretty well and no problems drawing. It was a bit slower snapping the strap to get the nub in the slot.

I know you are looking for a waste holster, but if you are looking for something different the Galco Ankle Glove for the J-Frame has a thumb break that will work with any J-Frame. The strap goes across the top of the grip backstrap, it'll work with 60/640/638.

Cheers,
Sam

Ross leather also makes a holster that snaps behind the triggerguard, if that interests you.

I myself do not like thumb breaks or snaps- Mr alessi god rest his sould would tell you if your holster won't retain the gun without one it is the wrong holster and I agree- a proper holster will retain the gun all by itself without straps or snaps
