Would you shoot someone throwing rocks?

In 1955 when I was 14 I worked on a truck farm in wisconsin with other kids. I was on my knees working when another kid in fun threw a oversize hard beet or radish at me. I never seen it comeing and it hit me alongside the head same as a rock. It drove me temperarly killing insane. I tackled him and was chokeing him out. He reached up, got his hand in my mouth and pulled my lower lip off my jaw, and I dont blame him! I was bent on killing him.
When you get blindsided like that I imagine most would react like I did, probley doesnt matter whether you are 14 or 40! I dont recall getting madder, faster any other time in my life!

People were killing each other with rocks and sticks long before firearms were thought of. Still are in some parts of the world.

A deadly weapon is a deadly weapon. Just because is crude dosn't mean it won't kill you.

The Border Patrol runs into this all the time. As FM points out, getting clobbered like that can be damned serious. If it happens to an LEO it gives anybody around access to your weapon.

So much for the myth of civilization.

Before I read this I'd think they were over reacting - not so sure I'd look at it the same way after reading this:

Man charged with murdering Md. detective

If he were hurling rocks at me, and I had no way to get out of the way, yeah, I might shoot him. If he were tossing them at you....I'd use my cell and call the cops. sorry I wont use deadly force anymore to defend others. Im not in that business anymore and I carry to defend myself and my family....sorry but......I once saw a hooker who had her head bashed in with a rock...one single rock....she was dead....rocks are dangerous and even though I might not have a legal duty to retreat, I might do it anyway just because I know what its like to explain to 24 fellow citizens why you killed someone....and while I might think rock throwing is nasty business, they might think its childs play. Oh yeah, don't they use rocks to kill people in middle east countries....its called death by stoning.....

Elderly lady in Chicago shot a kid who threw a brick at her and hit her in the chest. Even in Chicago, no charges were filed against her!

^^^ the lady in chicago was like 80 something, im 2 hours from chicago and i was listening to the radio on the way to work the day after, the lady's next door neighbor called in and said these kids were out of control, always harrasing her, and all the neighbors backed her up to the cops, cause she was so nice and old. but none the less, that says alot getting away with it in chicago. sounds to me though that this cop didnt even see it coming, so he probably couldnt shoot anyone. questions like this are hard to answer, becuse it really depends on the circumstance and seeing as how all situations are differnet and there are always TONS of variables, the question is really would you shoot someone to defend your life, of course! just my take on things

That young punk took a cheap shot at the officer. He deserves a 9mm to the head. Marylands judicial system will just slap him on the wrist and set him free again. I have many friends in the Baltimore PD, he is lucky to be alive.

If I feel my life is in danger...
Be it from a person with a gun, knife, brick, or is pounding me senseless with their hands and feet... I will do what I have to do, to defend myself and make it out of the situation alive.

There are many ways of having deadly force used against you. I doubt seriously I would shoot someone for throwing rocks at me since the potential for a rock being fatal is small. It is more likely I would make him eat one of his rocks as I am beating him senseless.

The rock might not kill you.. It may just knock you out cold. Then he is going to take your gun and shoot you with it, or stomp you to death with his feet, or just keep beating on you. You dont have to be in fear of death. Being in fear of great bodily harm is justification for use of deadly force when you have no other options. Look at it this way, if it only puts out one of your eyes, you can still get a sight picture with the good eye. So maybe you are not dead, just a guy laying on the ground with no sight in one eye out like a broken light bulb

Of course, you are right. The issue here would be the potential outcome after the shooting. A District Attorney may not feel someone throwing a rock at you would justify deadly force. Your legal bills will start around $30,000. I do not feel like paying that amount for shooting somebody that was throwing rocks.

As a youth, I am sure you threw rocks at someone or had someone trow a rock at you. In some communities, rock throwing is common, even at cars that drive through. People cannot go around shooting over thrown rocks.

Just saying.

Taking a life is a very serious matter. It cannot be undone once done.

If you resist or act with empty hands I may either pepper spray you or taze you. If you have ANY THING in your hands you're going to be looking down the barrel of my gun.

Distance is Your Friend

If'n I could not get outta range of said rock chunker or
Jawbone of an Ass whielder, ect...
I'd be obligated to stop that there action right there.

Been shot at, had beer bottles thrown at me, threatened with baseball bats, knives and one cat even drew a Mid-Evil Broad Ax on me 'once'.
No Ernest T. Bass' though.

Some backward countries still practice stoning. What do you think that is? Yes I'd consider the situation to be weapons free.

I once got hit with a jelly roll! Lockheed was on strike. Working security I was assigned across the street from the pickets. It was in the middle of the night and we had a generater set up with spots. As a guard we couldnt strike by law as it was a defense plant. That and they were also carefull that our contract came up at a seperate time from the regular workers. Us guards would all kick in about $20s apiece a week for dougnuts and coffee to supply the strikers as we were in a awkward positition. One big tough old boy evidently didnt get the word early. He was bellering obsentities and insults from across the road. Some old woman tried to set him straight as I was just standing there takeing it. Why you shouldnt swear at that poor guard. He is just doing his job. Why he even bought those doughnuts you are eating! I wish she hadnt said that! He let loose with a string of oaths and threw the roll and hit me in the face at a good 30 yards! He couldnt have done that again in 20 trys!
