The gun store yesterday on the clearance table had a number of Galco holsters for sale. I picked up a black Summer Comfort for a 5" 1911 at $30.00. It's Galco's version of the Bruce Nelson design considered a classic by many. I've got plenty of range holsters for my 5" 1911's but not any quality concealment rigs, for $30.00 I figured I could't go wrong. I've been wearing it with my Dan Wesson Razorback for part of yesterday and today around the house and running errands. My thoughts so far:
My typical IWB rig is either a commander sized alloy 1911 or a Sig 239 in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II. Compared to the Versa Max, the Summer Special takes up a lot less real estate on the belt and is more versatile in finding the spot that is "just right". I've been wearing it just behind the point of my hip. The gun does ride higher on the belt than a Versa Max. It does feel a little top heavy, but this could be from carrying a steel framed gun compared to an alloy frame. When standing it does feel like the muzzle is poking me in the butt. It's a minor irritation and I have a feeling I just haven't found the "right spot" yet and the holster will probably break in some.
What I really like about it is the forward cant. It puts the butt of the gun far enough forward so that it does not interfere with seat backs either in an either an office chair or while driving. The butt of the gun is also far enough forward that I don't have to go through controtions to draw from a seated position inside my vehicle.
I do like the holster, but I don't think it will be an EDC. It does give me an opportunity for when I want to carry a full sized 1911. Where it really shines though is it is comfortable while seated. This may be the hoster I start to use for our numerous 3 hour treks driving between Phoenix and Sierra Vista.
