Sorry man...
I was fully ready to be waiting until mid-December, as I thought they might be taking their sweet time (no reason to rush getting firearms in the hands of law-abiding, trained citizens), so I was really surprised when my permit showed up.

I was fully expecting to see it today.
Now what is up? This is crazy. Everyone else has theirs!
We have had problems with our mail in the past, with neighbors getting ours and us getting our neighbors... I wonder if I could call someone and find out if the permit was sent.
Any cops that can run my info???

I sent my application in on Tuesday of this week, so I will see how long it takes to arrive. 11/8/11 was the date I mailed mine in

You guys should be happy.... In Colorado it takes at least 60 days, and as long as 90 days on a regular basis to get them.

lost lake,
How about sending an inquiry to the same address as the app. went to? Couldn't hurt, and it sure sounds like it got side-tracked somewhere.
If the check has cleared, you might ask if you need to re-submit.
Helpful suggestions will start somebody to actually consider where
the darn thing has gone. (Might be part of the "nice" package......)

I am from MI can I carry in WI?
In Mi it is $150 for 5 years plus finger prints every time. This is what is on my card. This license allows the licensee to carry a pistol on or about his person anywhere in the state, except
...in a school,on school property, day care center, child placing agency, sports arena, stadium, bar, liquor by the glass, church, synagogue, mosque, temple or other place of worship, dormitory or classroom of a college or univ or casino or as otherwise prohibited by law.: Also I travel to WI does any one know if I can carry in WI?

Congrats PeterK!
I got mine today too.
What a cheesy looking permit. My Utah one looks much better. Heck, my library card looks better, and my library card looks more official.
Hey, you could carry your 686 before. I carried mine for years.

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!!
lost lake,
I was beginning to think there was a black hole at the local Post Office. Congratulations! Even though it should've been here a week ago.
30,000 app.'s so far, and counting.
I see our local P.O. has a No Guns sign at the door, just in case
anybody had forgotten about post offices in the last coupla weeks.

Glad to hear you got yous today! I have a scope inky 686, so easiest to carry over the shoulder and outside of the jacket is just a pain. Shot her today and I sure wouldn't wanna be on the other side of her at 75 yards! Really gonna try to get one with it this year

I'm also in with the many. I see my check was cashed though. My biggest thing is 'woods carry', & some for travel. Yes woods carry was always there, just now don't have to worry about jackets covering & such.

I took a CCW class at Greenfield PD (suburb of Milwaukee) (excellent class btw - I've got my permit, but I love great training).
Disclaimer - this is my recollection of the commentary, not a direct quote.
One of the things they covered is the paradigm shift cops now have to have here. It used to be that "gun" meant "bad guy" (not totally, but in many situations). Now, "gun" more likely means "good guy" or at least "neutral guy".
They (Greenfield PD) have modified their standard approach for traffic stops and field interviews to include asking if a person is a CCW holder (CCW holder has no duty to announce, but does have a duty to advise the officer if asked. Announcing on contact with LEO is advised.)
Now that is one agency and I'm sure that similar conversations are happening in other agencies all over, thought policies will vary and officer discretion means that the range of response can be varied.
My best advice in dealing with law enforcement (after having worked with police departments - as a civilian - for 6 years) is to announce you are a CCW holder and that you have a weapon as soon as practicable. They will appreciate it. It can be done discreetly (by announce, I don't mean that you need to shout).
The other bit of advice is know the law. By carrying a weapon, you've escalated any situation you become involved in to having at least one gun. You will be held to a higher standard when it comes to de-escalating situations and/or choosing to act. Knowing where you can carry, when you are privileged to act, and what your responsibilities are become your legal obligations, in addition to being good sense.

Announcing is advised by whom? Just don't announce to officer Harless in Ohio that you have a carry permit.....

I wouldn't expect cops to be thrilled to find out that you are carrying, but most will appreciate knowing a gun is on scene.

That officer is on PAID administrative leave. Unless things have changed.
The WI DOJ phone number listed on their website is a 'out of service' number.
EDIT: Oops, my bad... Wrote the number down wrong. I had to leave a message for Walt. The receptionist said he takes care of all mistakes made on permits.
I MUST have a number, it probably just isn't printed....

Regardless of where he was, that psycho cop escalated the situation through the stratosphere the minute he came on scene. What do they teach you when you take a good CCW class. The first thing you need to do when things start to get a bit dicey is to do your best to de-escalate the situation. If the person confronting you tries to take it to the next level you need to try to bring the situation back to calm. Every move that cop made and everything he said made that situation more and more stressful. Through that whole video, the permit holder was calm, courteous, and respectful of the officer. And hey, what kind of bozo cop searches the back of a vehicle with 2 people sitting in the front?? Everything that "officer" did was wrong, and his partner should be just as guilty for letting things get so out of control.

Mine is a similar oddity. My Ohio CCW says it expires on 2/29/13. As that date NEVER comes up under the calendar system we currently use I guess it must me a lifetime CCW ;D

The DOJ called this morning and my wife answered. She asked if he wanted to talk to me and he said he would just leave a message.
"Tell him the 'matter' he needs resolution to will be taken care of today. Afterward he should return the defective item to the original address."
She thought it was funny how he refused to come right out and say what the 'matter' was... When she asked if this was about a permit, he said he couldn't discuss the issue with anyone other than me....

Little bit, but it almost seems like they had a big pile and just gave shovel fulls to each person, since some people that sent on the second got theirs and others that sent on the first are still waiting.
But at least I haven't gotten a rejection.............yet

Today I should get my new license with a number on it. We'll see. Walt was concerned that my current license has no number, but the receptionist acted like this isn't an uncommon thing.
You'd think before the license is glued to the paper that someone would notice the entire upper right side is completely blank.

There was probably a guy thinking "I don't think that one had a number on it" after he sealed the envelope. Then thought " If it didn't he'll call."

My brother sent his in on the 3rd and hasn't seen it yet either.
I think they should let a guy carry if he has a permit from another state they honor.

I also wasn't able to mail until the 8th, in the PM from Kenosha. As I understand it they hit the 30,000 applications received mark about that time.
At their current processing speed they are not going to meet the 45 day mark and I expect my permit to be another 8 or so weeks out.

Must have multiple people working on filling them, each taking a stack of apps and a list of numbers and they get assigned somewhat randomly. DOJ website said; "First in, first out". Not that the number on the card makes any difference to me. Just good to get one.

It seems that once they cash your check it takes a couple more days to get your license.

I just got my replacement license with an actual number. So Walt promised he'd get my new permit taken care of on Tuesday and I got it on Friday. I am a one day mailing from Madison which means they mailed it Thursday. By back figuring that means permits float around the DOJ for two days. While I was hoping they would issue my original number (did they? Who knows, but I did send mine in the minute the post office opened and handed it to the clerk) my number is just a hair over 2900 now.
I guess when a yahoo calls in and says he has no number they are going to invalidate that permit and issue an new one with a new number. I just wanted a really low number because it would be cool to show my grandkids (hopefully I won't have any of those to worry about for many years yet) that I was one of the first to get a permit!
Oh well....
