hey all,

i have a model 60-14 J-frame revolver and an airweight 337 (ti cylinder with alloy frame) revolver. I would like to find a good in-the-waistband holster for these j-frames. I have an inexpensive Uncle Mike's IWB holster that is simply a cloth holster with a simple clip that you clip onto your belt. It works really well at concealing the gun, but i've had my revolver fall out (particularly the heavier all-steel model 60) a couple of times from this holster so I'd like to find something that is comfortable, conceals well, and is a little more secure than the Uncle Mike's holster.

What would you recommend for an IWB holster for a J-frame?

Thanks in advance!

I'm a big fan of my Remora no-clib IWB/Pocket holster. One of the best $25 investments I've ever made.

I bought this cheap holster from Dillon. It is my favorite J frame holster and I have a bunch. Tuckable too.

I carry my 642 in a Wraith IWB holster by Seth's Gun Leather. It's an excellent holster. It conceals well, draws easily, but does a good job of retaining the gun. Mine was customized to ride a little lower so that the cylinder is more in line with the belt. I think it helps with stability and comfort and doesn't impede the draw at all. I can't think of a better general purpose IWB holster, at least for me.

When I first started totin' 35 years ago I did use an IWB suede holster, and it was fairly comfortable. Instead of wearing the gun behind my right hip, (I am right handed) I wore it cross draw at the 9 o'clock position - much more comfortable in a sitting position or in a car. The reality of the situation is that I also weighed 35 pounds less, and my pants were a lot looser back then!

I know most people now frown on the old suede type holsters because they are not capable of having the gun re-holstered easily, but that never concerned me much. If I was going to use my gun, it would be seen anyway, so I never lost sleep over it. Today's IWB are usually made of leather and reinforced with metal for easy re holstering. Some are also made with plastic or nylon, and allow for your shirt to be tucked in. While I admit to having never tried one of these bulky types of IWB holster, they just don't look comfortable to me. A lot of fella's swear by them, so it might just be me. the bottom line here is you have to experiment and find what is right for you.

Just about all of the makers our there offer a basic IWB clip holster. If you buy a good leather one, it should solve your retention problem.

chief mentioned an open-top holster- I went to the local GS and wanted an open-top, they didn't have one so they made fun of me- "why do you care? Nobody's gonna see it anyway??" Well, I had a reason, if you want to practice drawing- and I have nothing against what works for anybody else- it's a real pain to re-holster a pistol in one that doesn't stay open 20-30 times in a row.
(I left, went across town and bought a Galco open-top that same day.) I have 2-3 IWBs that have the single clip, but a couple of them- when you walk, sit down and stuff- they turn sideways a little. I wanted one that either had two clips- or one long one- and that the bottom part, that bends up to catch the belt- was bent UNDERneath the belt instead of outwards- holds better when Itry and draw. Ended up with a CB-ST which I love. Sorry to ramble, just trying to cover the bases.
