Are there any laws/requirements concerning printing in south carolina. This is something I had never heard of until I got on this forum, but it keeps coming up. Did I miss something ?

Not withstanding what the actual law is.......... why would you even accept printing? I would think that you would WANT to be totally discrete so IF you ever had to draw & use your firearm, it would be a surprise to your attacker.

If you are printing than I think you need to adjust the clothing you are wearing or your equipment needs to be tweaked. After all, concealed means concealed. Just MHO of course.........

I have a fairly casual friendship with a local cop. We see each other 3 or 4 times a week when we buy coffee at the local Starbucks. The girls working the counter will flirt in a joking manner with both of us, so there is often some light hearted sarcasm directed from me to him and him to me.

A couple of weeks ago, when I sat at the adjoining table to his, he said, "What are you carrying?" I thought he was talking about the IPod I had in my hand and I showed it to him. He said, "No. I mean on your belt, under your shirt."

I told him it was a S & W 640 Pro. He said something about him having eagle eyes and I said, "How long have you known me? About seven years?"

And he said, "You've been carrying all along?" I nodded "yes" and he was shaking his head in disbelief.

He did say, "If you can't see it, it is concealed." That's probably his definition. All guns will print when worn on the belt. I don't think 100% concealment is an actual requirement. In NY if you display your weapon (wear it openly, not in a security guard uniform) you will be charged with disturbing the peace.

But unless your printing of the weapon causes a disturbance, it is perfectly legal for it to print. Of course someone could see the printing and scream, "Gun!! Gun!!", at that point I'm not sure who is disturbing the peace, the legal gun totin' citizen or the moron screaming his head off.

So "printing" is a term we use around here, an effort not to show more bulges than normal. I could not find it used in SC state concealed carry laws. The law states : Concealable weapon” means a firearm having a length of less than twelve inches measured along its greatest dimension that must be carried in a manner that is hidden from public view in normal wear of clothing except when needed for self defense, defense of others, and the protection of real or personal property.

In SC they intend for us not to print, and CAN- MAY- MIGHT- say something to a citizen if he is. The problem really is that if you're printing it's a version of - well- displaying a firearm. Like Packard said, if it prints you may cause a disturbance which is punishable. The one thing I always remember when I leave the house is- I think Ayoob said this- imagine being in a grocery store, and some lady figures out you have a gun- she starts screaming at the top of her lungs "He's got a gun! RUN!RUN!"
I imagine that happening to me, and I make SURE I;m not printing.

Honestly I do double takes when I see Smart Phones on a guy's waist. They look a lot like pistol holsters at first glance.

TN has no requirement to conceal. We have Handgun Carry Permits, open carry or printing is a non-issue. As a business owner, I could not care less.

GA has a Weapons Carry License. GWCL. It allows for concealed-carry, open-carry and in-between. So, printing is pretty much a non-issue except for when it excites sheeple........

I always worry about printing when carrying. Not becausse of legal issues but because, as chuck1217 said: "imagine being in a grocery store, and some lady figures out you have a gun- she starts screaming at the top of her lungs "He's got a gun! RUN!RUN!"

Something like this can make you the bad guy real fast.

Exactly. As I understand it you (the gun carrier) can be charged with either menacing or inducing panic, depending on the level of the Hissy-Fit the scared person exhibits.

And in this day and age where folks seem to go out of their way to become offended, as well as the 15 minutes of fame that goes along with the "Instant Reality Show" of seeing their mug on the TV, it could get really, really ugly!

I don't worry too much about the lump my gun may add to a pocket or baggy sweater but I am very careful about raising my arms to get something off a shelf, bending over to tie a shoe, etc. as I do not want any part of the gun itself showing. When I get a new holster I wear it around the house to make certain I am properly "dressing around the gun."

The above posts remind me of a story...Imagian that!:D

My Grandfather was in a station waiting on a train...He kept adjusting his overcoat.
The added weight in an inside pocket was pullin' it down on that side a bit.

A Railroad detective ran over to him and asked what it was he wanted to tell him.
Grandfather says he didn't have anything to tell him.

A few minutes later another adjustment of the overcoat brings the detective on the run again.
"I know your giving me a 'sign', now what is it you want to tell me!" said the railroad dick.

My grandpa sez,"I've got a quart of whiskey in this inside pocket and I'm gonna whop you upside yur
head with it, if you don't go on about yur business and leave me alone!"

The moral of this story I believe is: Always try to level out...
Snub-nose in right front pocket...Roll of half dollars in left front pocket...;):D

If the cops show up, the first thing to say is, "I want her (the screamer) charged with disturbing the peace. I am carrying legally, minding my own business, with a properly concealed weapon. If she has an issue she can dial 911. But she chose to disturb the peace. I want her charged and arrested."

When the cop says "no", ask for a supervisor. But insist that the report says that she was the one disturbing the peace even if there is no arrest.

It is just like the "freedom of speech" issue where a man yells "fire" in a movie theater. You cannot do that. It is not covered by freedom of speech, and neither is the screamers action covered. She is accountable. She needs to be taught that. Her actions can bring about disastrous results so it is not a frivolous matter.

"Hissy fits" are one thing, yelling "gun" is quite another.

Yeah but if she actually sees my gun and not a "print" then have I not violated the first law of concealed carry?

Do you mean an accidental instantaneous flash exposure. Sort of like Janet Jackson's "wardrobe failure"?

If your behavior is innocent, then yelling "fire" (or "gun") is not.

Of course I'm not a lawyer. But I liken it to a small animal crossing a road. If I cross the double yellow line I'm breaking the law. It is incidental, and I don't think it is punishable.

If you trip and fall and it exposes your gun, I think it is likewise incidental.
