Where to keep my gun when I'm in the pool or shower

We don't have kids yet, but my wife and I agreed to act as if we do now so that we ingrain good habits with firearm safety. We keep our guns loaded, and the rule is that they are either locked in the safe or on my person. One of them is always on me except while we're sleeping, when they're both in the quick-access safe next to the bed.

This works for almost every situation except two that come up daily: in our pool, or in the shower.

I've been keeping my carry gun in my shorts (pocket carry) and keeping my shorts within view - either right outside the shower door on the toilet, or on our back patio bar. The thing is that they are not visible to me 100% of the time for obvious reasons.

Ideally I think I would install a quick-access safe in the bathroom and maybe one on our patio bar?

Any other ideas? How do you guys handle situations like this?

No opinion on the pool carry situation. For your shower go in the bathroom and lock the door.

I take meds for my paranoia..................:D

all kidding aside......... if you're in such a dangerous area..... maybe move!!!

budda bing........

OK...OK......

my ready safe is in the walk-in closet ..... at most maybe 10 ft from the shower!

The pool...........................I'd add a 8ft privacy fence and a lockable gate...(barbwire optional!)

Our area is very safe, probably the safest place we've ever lived. It's just that to me it doesn't make sense to carry at all unless you do it 100% of the time.

Also, if trouble ever does come to our home it will probably come from the rear because we have alleys between the houses in my area. It's usually just garbage trucks that come through there but you get the occasional junk truck and people stealing fruit.

Youre fine with the bathroom fix, maybe lock the door as mentioned.
As for the pool, buy a speargun.
Even a secret service agent, swat, seal, etc. will have a few "moments" unarmed.
Life ain't worth living if you can't enjoy it occasionally free from concern.
I hope this doesn't sound snarky. I'm not intending to.

I understand and appreciate this sentiment, but we spend a lot of time hanging out by the pool, a large chunk of every weekend. It doesn't make sense to me to have inaccessible firearms for a large amount of time regularly.

Plus, being armed makes me feel free from concern.

I agree...... but everything has practical limits........

If you are swimming laps/napping on a float...... are you really going to get out of the pool.....and get to a gun in a safe under the bar...... before a guy jumps a 4 foot safety fence?........ remember the 21 ft rule? Heck, as you are set up now..... he might just grab your shorts hoping for a wallet and get your gun instead........

If I'm in the shower......and someone breaks into my house...unless he's driven a truck though the front door..
I doubt I'll hear him until he's in the bathroom with me........a gun in any lockbox isn't going to be much use.............

One possible idea is to turn on your intrusion protection/burglar alarm before you head to the bathroom. Set it to instant so you will have more than a few seconds of notice prior to needing your handgun.

I'm sure that some will snicker at alarm idea - but, a good alarm, or even better, a good dog can bring a lot of peace of mind ...

We have an alarm as well as 3 dogs. I usually set it while showering if I'm alone in the house.

I'll take it from many responses that this sounds crazy to a lot of you...I have to say that I'm surprised because it never occurred to me that I was being paranoid. I was expecting lots of "here's where I keep mine while in the pool."

I don't generally feel paranoid, but having several cars broken into outside my house, my garage broken into, and a gun stuck in my face changed the way I looked at the world and how I get around in it several years ago. (None of this happened here, all back in Central Illinois.)

I'm not paranoid about fires either, but we have several smoke detectors and extinguishers throughout the house.

This is a good point. Our patio bar is back away from the fence so it would be difficult to get to. The dogs probably would have gotten to him before that anyway.

Each to his own. What the Blendersons (and I) consider prudent, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts considers the law. Fortunately, I don't spend time in the pool (don't have one). The bathroom question has already been answered.

Still thinking about the pool. Probably a tethered quick-access lockbox under some towels or trash.

Being constantly armed means you must compromise on other activity. For go showering and swimming and take only bubble baths instead. By building a shelf above the tub, you should have no trouble keeping the powder dry in your great equalizer, as long as you keep splashing to a minimum. You might want to rethink some other topics as well.
