I supposed the same could be said about the firearm. It is your "knife retention firearm". If someone goes for you knife, you can shoot them.
Seems like a bit of marketing to call it a "firearm retention knife". Sounds like a sales gimmick. Mall ninja terminology. Any weapon you carry can be used to defend yourself or another weapon, but you don't give them fancy names. I suppose a bright flashlight could carry the same name at night, it is my "weapon retention flashlight". You blind the attacker to protect other weapons.

Ultimately, beyond all fancy terminology, it comes down to having options.
In contrast to even the most compact back-up gun, a knife is easy to carry and there is little excuse not to have one well-placed on you.
You don’t have to use it, but you can’t use it if you haven’t got one. If you end up just cutting some string with it, so what.
Thinking of it as your “gun retention knife” could become counterproductive if, as someone alluded to above, you overthink that function and focus on the knife rather than other more basic physical retention techniques which all officers learn; the kind of knife skills the OP talks about are not generally taught at the police academy.

Gun retention for an officer carrying strong side, OWB, with a level three retention holster might be different than a CCW passive retention holster?

Points to ponder:
1. Since most of the folks here carry concealed, rather than openly carrying, is weapon retention really anything to lose sleep over? Of course, this could change if you were facing off against Superman, whose x-ray vision could easily spot that J-frame in your pocket or on your ankle. In that case, your gun retention knife would likely prove ineffective.
2. If you have a gun retention knife, wouldn't you also need a knife retention gun?

Been toting a knife in my pocket since I was about 6 or 7. Went to a clip lock back folder (spyderco) about 1997. Toted it until maybe 3 years ago and now have a Ganzo Firebird (spyderco knockoff) I carry daily. Probably cut something with it everyday. I can easily open and close it with one hand. Strong side only though. Guess I need to do something about that.
The Ganzo is cheap enough if I had to ditch it or were to lose it, no big loss. It holds an edge just as well as the Spyderco.

Food Retention Device.
My cats are shameless beggars—worse than any dog. While I am trying to eat in peace, the stare at me and beg. (See picture).
So I deploy the feathered cat distraction device with my non-fork hand. This allows me to eat in peace and my waistline proves my method works!!!

Just out of curiousity, what was your "Airborne Infantry"
National Guard unit? Battalion and/or regimental designation,
not just 'Charlie Company', if you please.

I don't think you have security clearance for that kind of information

Dang...you folks are wa-a-a-a-y-y-y outta my league. I had never heard of a gun retention knife until now. I gotta admit, the thought had never really entered my mind before. I suppose that just shows how behind-the-times I am.
As many of you know, the community in which I live is relatively small. (And that's probably being generous.) The firearm that is with me much of the time is a short-barreled lever action that I keep in the pickup for dispatching coyotes or for whatever need may arise. In fact, many of the residents of our town carry a similar firearm in their respective pickup trucks.
I guess, if "push comes to shove," I do have some sort of retention option to keep that lever-action rifle safe. She's a 40-pound border collie that rides in the front passenger seat next to me. If I'm not in the truck, she practically tries to eat people who dare come near. I suppose you could call her a gun retention dog. Couldn't you?

1st Battalion (Airborne) 143rd Infantry Regiment in Houston, Texas. My Company was located on Ellington Field, Houston, Texas. They are back located in the Houston Metro area and on the internet if you care to check them out yourself.

I hope the above information satisfies your and anyone's concerns regarding this matter.

Thanks YkcorCal for your post with videos. I carried the neck knife pictured in your post for years before the TDI knife came out. I totally forgot I
had it. I put it up on the hanger with my vest when I retired some 8 years past.
I’ll take it out of retirement for potential use.

this pretty much covers it. Everyone should be carrying a knife it's a basic tool. A fixed blade horizontally between 11-1 can be drawn with either hand, and is a great tool.

If I was involved in a bad breath distance encounter and attempted to involve both a knife and pistol, I'd hate to think of the outcome to my health .

By the time a bad guy took my gun, my gun-retention gun, and started to go for my tactical nail clippers, there is no doubt my wife would have cleared her purse and shot the ********.

A high quality folding knife carried inside the waist band at 12 o'clock. Regardless of the purpose for which it is deployed, with practice it can be reached and deployed equally easily with either hand. In my opinion, the best way to go in case one arm/hand is pinned, injured, or otherwise occupied with the task at hand.
