Brevard County Sheriff's Department released the dash cam footage of a career criminal coming out of the back seat of a car and opening fire point blank at two deputies. They returned fire as they tried evading the assault.

One deputy was hit by a bullet and received multiple head wounds when the perp beat him with the rifle butt. The second deputy was not injured. Perp pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff's statement is below. The camera footage begins at 3:31 and runs about one minute. The footage is shown again starting at 5:40 with the Sheriff describing what is happening.

His statement at the end discussing what is wrong with our system when a criminal with this record (over 40 crimes) and awaiting trial on other charges is allowed to be on the street is worth listening to also.

Tense moment. Perp got what he deserved. Video will probably make a good training tool.
I'm glad LEO bullets striking back windshield didn't penetrate...baby in car.
Deputy Potters fired at least three times at guy in red shorts fleeing at least fifty yards away. I think Deputy Potters mistook him for the shooter. I'm glad for everyone involved that he missed.

The system that allowed this psychopath to walk the streets freely after numerous, serious felony arrests failed in every sense of the word. (Or perhaps it's working exactly as intended if we're being cynical.) Glad those officers made it out mostly intact - may the wounded deputy have a speedy recovery.

I particularly liked the Sheriff's response, knowing someone was going to question why the suspect was shot so many times, "evil can never be dead enough".

Brings back memories of another Florida Sheriff's response why they shot the suspect 68 times, "because we ran out of bullets".

Gotta love LE leaders who have a spine.

Prayers for the quick recovery of the injured deputy.

We should call for the immediate resignation of whatever criminal justice officer allowed that animal to roam free!

Kudos to the second deputy, he handled business - he needs a raise. Heck, they both probably need a raise and two weeks vacation paid for by the tax payers.

The reality of the criminally feral is much worse than the average person appreciates, so we have folks of various political persuasions who are worried about harsh outcomes for people who have earned it.

This stuff makes me so angry that I don't have words that can be put on here. This country is in real trouble. This apparent open season on LE is the most disgusting thing imaginable. We all need to ask why scumbags like this are allowed to roam the streets and put our's in jeopardy such as this.

Agree whole-heartedly with you. But am glad my Son-In-Law is a retired Deputy Sheriff here now.

That whole video left me sitting here with my mouth open. Can't believe that a bozo with that kind of criminal history was let out on bond...even with additional warrants out for his arrest. Something's not right. Thankfully, both deputies are still alive. Prayers go out to Deputy Potters and his family. Heck...what am I saying!!?? Prayers go out for both deputies and families.

I don't know, but I would like to think there's the proverbial "silver lining" somewhere in this incident. Hopefully the criminal justice system got rude awakening and realized this situation could've gotten worse...much worse.

What a tragedy. sacrasm.

The real question why was he out of prison?

He was never going to turn his life around only harm or kill innocence people.

It's really amazing both deputies survived. What struck me was how the deputies treated them with kindness.

Once again, the system fails, those who protect the peace are injured, bureaucrats will continue to push unilateral ineffectual solutions which only affect law abiding citizens, and the ignorant, mouth-breathing, bleeding hearts will most likely be holding a memorial service for this scumbag soon while pushing the narrative that police are bloodthirsty killers who ought to be defunded.

It all could have been handled safely if one of the two people talking to the deputies had alerted them that the shooter in the back seat was armed. But no that didn't happen, instead they just stood by and let the deputies get ambushed. They are no better than the scumbag shooter.

Uh...you might want to be a little careful with remarks like that. This has been a pretty good thread so far, but, speaking from experience, you are treading on...

I wish every county in this nation had a Sheriff like that one. It would be a much better place to live if we did.
I have known the Sheriff for many years. I think we first met at the ASPCA's Tux and Tails fundraiser where Sheriff Ivey is the Master of Ceremonies. He does the event with his loyal hound dog, "Junny", at his side. Naturally Junny is a trained and Sworn Deputy of Brevard County

Sheriff Ivey is a Great Friend to the NRA, a Huge believer and supporter of the Constitution and it's 2nd Amendment, a lover of Dogs and an all around good guy

Every year at the Friends of the NRA fundraiser Sheriff Ivey donates "A day with the Sheriff" to be auctioned off. He also donates his sidearm and patrol rifle that he used for that year. He has a new sidearm and rifle custom built each year. These both bring BIG money in our Community

Sheriff Ivey is the kind of Sheriff that we need around this Nation along with with guys like Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Sheriff Ivey is very open and accessible to the Citizens of our County. He posts weekly videos to Social Media and the BCSO website. Game shows like "Wheel of Fugitives" and "Fishing for Felons" and he gets a great response from the Community with tips to the Brevard CrimeLine

I am glad that this incident did not end with the loss of a Deputy. I know how quickly those situations can come up and be over

I can't recall how many times Sheriff Ivey has won re-election, but he will always have my vote

Not sure why the sheriff was so quick to declare the two passengers innocent. Did they really not know they had an armed convicted felon in the car? If they did, could they be charged with (accessory to) murder for not informing the deputies before the shooting started?
