I bought an Uncle Mike's IWB holster for my S&W 642. When I carry at 2:30 the holster rides up when I sit. When I carry at 3:00 the holster moves toward 2:30 and then rides up when I sit. When I try to put the holster at 3:30 to 4:00 I find I am not flexible enough to turn and install the holster, let alone put the 642 into it. I am so NOT flexible any more at 67 years of age.

So I guess I need a holster that has loops that go around the belt to keep it from riding up where ever I wear it. Or I need to just keep standing.

I carry my 642 at about 1:00. Granted I'm not an.... "old fat guy" as you described.

I'd think the holster with the loop may be your best bet. Mine is just the clip, but I haven't had any issues yet.

A J-frame revolver isn't the easiest gun to carry IWB, particularly in a holster. For me, a 1911 is MUCH easier, particularly in a Milt Sparks Summer Special. If you prefer the J frame, you might consider pocket carry, or, for IWB, a Barami. I find that the Barami puts the cylinder below the belt, making the revolver much more secure and comfortable. It also makes it a bit slower to get out.

For pocket carry, I need pleated-front Dockers with deep pockets, and I use a Don Hume JIT slide as a pocket holster, primarily to reduce wear on the pocket, also to give a consistent position to the revolver. And if all else fails, I could put it on my belt where it belongs!

Iwb

I feel your pain. I just bought an iwb for my 36. It has the loops, but still is not comfortable for everyday carry. Guess I'll just stick to pocket carry, it's easier for us fat guys.

I have several different IWB models that I make. My wife carries a 642 in a IWB similar to my "Southern Sidekick" holster in the 1:00-2:00 o'clock position . If she is going to be driving or sitting for a while she just slides the holster further back. You can check out photos on my website or in my Classified add if your interested. Feel free to email me through the link on my website with any questions.

Thanks,
Ryan

If you find it impossible, I'd try a pocket carry holster, when you know you'll be seated for any length of time, move it in to an ankle rig. I nearly never carry my J's IWB? Or, wind a couple of rubber bands around her and stick her IWB @ 10 or 11 o'clock while seated. A set of Barami hip grips might work for you if you want to IWB?

You just need a better quality holster.

All of my IWB holsters are Don Hume 715Ms. There are better IWB holsters, but a lot worse as well. The 715M is well made, stable and reasonably priced.

take a look at Kramer leather.. I am in the same shape and found his products excellent. I have 7 of them.

Not to be insulting but Uncle Mikes holsters, particularly the IWB holsters, are cheap for good reason. The IWB holster they make is pretty much junk. It is soft and collapses when the gun is drawn and it moves around and the clip is week and slips off easily. I assume you aren't using a cheap, pot metal .25 for carry? Then, why put an expensive lifesaving tool in a cheap, nearly useless holster? I fit into the demographic category you focused on here. I carry my guns IWB usually at roughly 2 O'clock on the strong side or sometimes crossdraw, when riding my cycle or driving. I often wear an ankle holster when on long drives also. Get yourself a good holster or two and experiment. Also, to sit with an IWB holster forward of the hip comfortably, you need to wear you pants at the waist lever or higher. If you wear your pants down on the hips with the belly hanging over the belt, IWB carry doesn't work very well...

I fit the older fat guy profile and carry a model 60 at about 3:00 strongside in a Blackhawk leather (size 06) IWB; extremely comfortable, easy reholster, adjustable cant, very easy reholster, conceals easily and in my area usually priced around $45.00

I don't have your particular difficulty with IWB carry. Though I am getting thicker in the middle as time goes on! This is the IWB I'm running currently. It's VERY comfortable but as was mentioned above, any or all of them rely on properly sized/positioned pants as well as a quality properly sized belt. This one is SO good it allows you to run a heavier larger weapon nearly trouble free. But any will require the above conditions be met.

I'm 64 years old, six feet tall and have a forty inch waist. This should put me in the old fat fart catagory. I can carry a full size 1911 IWB at four o'clock all day long with the right holster. I do prefer a light weight commander though. I think that it's a combination of the right holster (this is a bunch), right mental attitude and right physical shape.

To say you're not an old fat guy is an understatement. Your bicep looks like my thigh.

I think the hardest part of carrying a revolver IWB is the guns shape and the way most holsters are made. Most holsters will put the cylinder directly under the belt. So tighten it as much as you want the belt is only pushing in on the revolver over a 1/2" area of the cylinder. Not only that but with the cylinder at the belt line more of the gun is sitting above the belt than below it which makes it very easy to rock the top of it so to speak.

I tried everything with my 642 from the DH 715's to MS Summer Special, I finally settled on a Comp Tac 2:00. It is kydex and is a pretty snug fit on the revolver(not overly to damage the finish but enough to keep it secure) it also has a slight reverse cant so if you wear it at 2:00 the grip is canted back towards your 3:00 making sitting ALOT easier. It is held on with a kydex clip which locks securely to the belt while still allowing you to put it on, take it off, and slide it further back on the belt really easy.

I carry my revolver at 6:00 in an Uncle Mike's Neoprene left handed IWB. I carry it there because I am a middle aged fat guy and that is the only flat part of my waist. It has worked for me for years and it does not bother me standing, siting or walking.

I think one of Srigs or Lobo's Iwb's may help out with the loops you might consult them, they are both great leather makers

C/K 38,
I have one of his "snap" zero cant's OWB for an M&P 9c I'm about to try @ 2 o'clock, once the 1 1/2" belt for it arrives. (I only had a 1 3/4").

cool have I am one of those overly skinny guys but I have found a 15 deg cant at 4:00 to be comfortable, it might be worth trying, and way to go on supporting our members
