The problem with Bodyguards...

I like an OWB holster that I know my gun won't fall out of...say, while riding a motorcycle or working in my welding shop...climbing in, around and under stuff. For example, the Galco FL160B that I carry my 36-1 in works fine. I'd like to carry my 649 the same way, but the thumb strap is basically ineffective since the hammer is shrouded. The gun moves around too much in the holster.

Am I missing something?

Any suggestions, other than don't carry a Bodyguard in such situations?

I used to cary a 642 in a Comp Tac Kydex IWB holster. It was solid as a rock once in the holster. Leather will wear and give a bit where Kydex won't. That could be an option
 
I don't carry a J frame on the belt. My Bodyguard (a model 38 no dash from 1985) rides in my pocket. I have the K frame model 12-2 snubbie for the belt.

I used to have a Bianchi "Lightning" holster for my Bodyguard...

...which was a neat little holster. It was a pretty easy draw, but seems like reholstering and snapping the snap was a PITA.
 
My suggestion is a good pocket holster. Another poster made the same suggestion.

I ride a road bicycle for my exercise and the key is a good, deep pocket, esp. with a zipper or flap. For motorcycle use, there are a few pant options that have internal pocket zippers or really deep back pockets (i.e. pants made for EMTs). Dockers and others make these and they double up as good casual pants you can even wear with a sports jacket and ties if need be.

I have found these options very secure and discreet; concealed means concealed. The only disadvantage is losing (somewhat) the ability of a "quick draw" but unless you are unaware of your surroundings (or need it because you are a LE) this should not be a problem?
 
A quality hand made holster doesn't require a safety strap for retention. When I'm not building holsters, I like to spend time on my motorcycle. I have no concerns with retention while carrying a S&W 442 either on my hip or in my pocket.

I would suggest contacting the many leathermakers on her like lobo leather or bulldog above or Srigs and getting them to make you a holster with your problem in mind, they could be very helpful in solving your problem
 
Ray (LoboGunLeather) made this flap style holster for my 36-1. It gives very positive retention and protects the gun when I'm on a tractor or just working aroundthe farm. It would hold your 649 securely. I am considering having him make one for my two inch j-frames.

DeSantis used to make a Bodyguard-specific holster with a strap that fit over the goofy back of the hammer/hump . . .
 
I've used the Bianchi Lightning (photo posted by another member), and BlackHawk has a black leather holster that uses surgical elastic across the front to hold the trigger guard back into a recess- it's my recommendation. I can't remember the name, but it is easy to find on their website. Also, their leather holsters currently have free shipping!
 
I don't usually carry my 649 much OWB but when I did I used the Bucheimer Sheriff's model. It has a spring retention along the edge and the cylinder fits in a moulded area. It definitely will not come out unless you want it to. Conceals very well too. I've had this one close to 30 yrs. Might be able to find on places like Gunbroker or Ebay.

Gaylord Cyclone II

This model has been around for over 50 years. An original Chic Gaylord design but with an improved applied belt tunnel. It will work very well with shrouded hammers or internal hammer revolvers like the Bodyguard's or Centennial's.....as well as revolvers with standard hammers or even a bobbed hammer Chiefs Special like the one pictured above. A cinch to close the snap, secure retention and very fast to the draw. The limitations are the grips. It is designed for use with magnas or service style stocks. The "modern" boot grips are incompatible with this design. I craft these in neutral cant so it can be worn strongside or crossdraw.

I use a simple pancake holster I made myself, with light molding. Note I'm NOT a pro or even semi-pro leather worker :) No straps, and I've never had a problem with retention on a bike. Heck, I've even run wearing it with no issues. Not far in my steel toe boots, though.

It's similar to "The Slide" here: http://www.sideguardholsters.com/holsters/OWB_Holsters.htm but I made it cover a bit more on the outside.
