I've been researching these three pistols lately and have become somewhat intrigued by the PT738 based on the pictures and some of the reviews (have not been able to get my hands on one locally yet).

The PT738 appears to not be without some problems based on some occasional postings on the taurus forums and others, although both the P3AT and the LCP had some teething problems also.

Frequently noted highlights seem to be a) lock back on last round, b) manual lock open for cleaning, c) larger opening trigger guard, d) stainless slide, e) slightly more prominent sights.

Of particular interest is the larger trigger guard as I've experienced some trigger finger hammering with both the LCP and P3at. While I understand the whole, 'this is not a range gun', 'carried much shot little' concepts, it would be nice to have said gun which did not have such abrasive attributes.

But my real question has to do with the stainless slide which many people seem to recommend for this pistol. While I like the durability of a stainless slide, I typically find the sights (small as they are) to be harder to pick up on a stainless slide vs. blued. At least that's been the case between my 340pd and my wife's 642.

If I'm deciphering the research correctly, most of the people strongly advocating the ss slide are previous P3AT owners who have had some sort of finish problems with the P3AT slides? And am I correct in thinking that LCP owners have experienced no such slide finish issues?

It looks like there is enough sight there on either the ss or regular slide to use some highviz paint which would help.

Anybody have any experience with the PT 738?

Here is a gunblast video, and a couple pictures of the sights from the gunblast website.

Never mind the sights,
I have the P3AT and it will shoot small groups at 50'.
But the intended purpose of these pocket guns is to be a light little shooter for self defense.
All have small sights that without good vision they really arent usable as a target gun.

As well as the extra 2oz. 10oz is still very very light and a little more controlable. The slide lock is another great feature.

I want to get another .380 as a gift, but now I can't really decide between another P3AT or the Ruger, Taurus, and rumored M&P (I won't be convinced until it's in my hand:o).

And my little Kel-Tec pea shooter shoots so well it has become a regular range companion. With groups even smaller than my primary carry I have great confidence in it!

I've had four different Taurus products that were bought new. Had significant problem with all of them. I won't be buying any more of them.

I have had three different Kel Tec guns. A P32 and two P3AT. They all worked well. The only problem I have had is magazine springs. They seem to wear out fast. A good set of Wolff Springs solved the problem.

Of the ones you mentioned, I'd go with the LCP. I chose it over the Keltec because it just seemed to be a little better quality (although people that have the Keltec usually rave about them...). I have heard too many reports from various sources citing QC issues with recent Taurus products, so I just did not want to go there...

The LCP's trigger is fairly heavy (which is ok for a SD gun), but it is also pretty smooth and you know where it will break. It's got decent accuracy, too.

I recently got the Kahr P380, and I like it much better than my LCP. The Kahr is very good quality; great trigger (really great trigger...), accurate, has real sites, and the same size/a little smaller than the LCP/Keltec... It's pricey, but a really great pocket gun.

That's my 2 cents, good luck with your choice.

I have owned the Kel-Tec and I traded it for a Colt Mustang + $100.
I now carry the LCP. I did not want to mess up the Mustang. To me, the LCP has a smoother trigger and does not bite as badly as the Kel-Tec. I find it more accurate also.

The Mustang being heavier is more pleasant to shoot and more accurate than the other 2.

A Kahr CW9 is a little larger but is a 9mm and I hit steel spinners at 25 yds with it.

Everything is a trade off.

I recently bought a PT738. It is a great little gun and the case/holster I got withit works good too. Accurate and easy to shoot.

I did the same thing ...... got a Kahr P380 and traded off my Kel-Tec P3AT. Had no problems with the Kel-Tec but the Kahr's trigger is soooo much better and the Kahr is more accurate also (partly because of the trigger, IMO).

Like dmar said, the Kahr is a bit pricey but it's worth it, IMO.

I really like the Kahr. :)

Wifey and I both have LCP's and we both have Kel-tecs as well that were purchased before the LCP's came out. Neither of us carries the Kel-tecs anymore if that tells you anything. Neither of us is ever without the LCP either. Honestly never had a problem with either KT, and they are both still on duty in the household, we just both found the LCP more to our liking. The newer Rugers since the SR9 are frankly my very favorites as far as ergonomics are concerned of anything out there right now. Although I am impressed with the feel of the Walther PPS and PPQ.

Bottom line, I'd go with the Ruger first, Kel-Tec second, and about anything else before the Taurus. I've seen too many problems with them.
