Distinctive sound of an M16

Hey everyone, I've shot a variety of assault rifles, and none make that distinctive sound of an M16. I'm talking about that spring sort of sound when firing, no other rifle makes this sound. What causes this?

The rather large buffer (recoil) spring resides in the butt stock and runs pretty much the full length of the stock. When fired, the bolt group recoils back into the stock compressing the spring. The spring makes the sproing noise during the cycle.

Most other semi-auto rifles locate the recoil spring forward on the rifle so the spring is not directly under your ear.

I've had a couple AR's and I have to admit it's one of the more silly nosies you'll hear a gun make.

And...well~it sound's CHEAP! :D
 
Some Daisy products make a similar sound, if you are into nostalgia.

Anybody who ever laid in a wet paddy during a fire-fight can differentiate the difference between an M16, and AK47 and any other weapons. the M16 has a "tinnie" noise and the AK47 has a sharper "crack" - and don't ask me why... they just do.
 
My favorite sound made by a rifle is the ping of the enbloc clip when you fire the last round in a M1 Garand. Never noticed the tinney sound when shooting my AR.
 
The sproing changes to a sp-clk when the bolt locks back after the mag is empty. Lets you know to add more ammo.
 
I have replaced the OEM stock on my AR with an ACE-SOCOM stock, with abbreviated buffer tube/spring --- no "sproing" no more...
 
Replacing the buffer spring with a Silicone Carbide variety won't have the sprong sound. No other gun on earth sounds like a BAR, even from the woods a mile from your house!
 
That noise was the first thing I noticed shooting the M-16 in the service.
My ARs do the same and just part of shooting them to me. It does have a cheap sort of ring to it.
I'll have to pay attention to the last round noise mentioned, good tip.
 
Noise

The crack of an AK is something that makes the spinchter (sp) or A-hole to the more politically incorrect, tighten even to this day. A training aid was to fire an AK downrange so you could recognize the sound. The M16 is very distiguishable So's a Ma Deuce!
