Default New custom bird/trout knife

Pawn Shop cruising for guns....no luck....found this instead

I wasn't familiar with the maker, but the knife looked very nice and the sheath was high quality.
For $40, it's hard to get a quality leather sheath these days, let alone a knife to put in it!

Maker was George Beechey, he used 440C extensively, prolly what this one is. Hollow ground and EXTREMELY sharp.

Handles are a reddish linen micarta

I guess it's more of a filet knife than a bird/trout model.

The fly inset into the handle seemed cheesy at first, but is kinda growing on me

Is the fly in the handle covered with clear plastic, etc? It looks sorta classy, really, although I don't see this as a trout knife. I bet that handle is pretty slick to be using on fish, around water.

The blade says that he's in Zululand. That's in Natal, and I think I read that they transplanted trout there. The relatively high altitude may keep the rivers cool enough for trout. But I'd hate for a tiger fish to grab my trout tackle!

With my luck, I'd catch a 50 pound buzzsaw like that on 6 pound line with no wire leader and be out my lure real fast, fly or spinner. That's one of the few places where a trout angler probably has to keep an eye out for crocs...

What do you know about the maker? I've seen pix of some other South African knives, and quality seems high.

Beechey forged knives for a few years and then got away from it for a while. When he started again he adapted the Loveless way of stock removal and incorporated several features favored by Loveless in his knives. The micarta is Loveless' #1 choice for handle material and the "cant-in" lock shealth is Loveless all the way as is the no-choil, hollow ground blade. The blade grind should serve well while light tackle fishing or at the cleaning table. Looks to me like a very, very nice knife and worth 3 times what you paid. That's my opinion(which is worth what you just paid for it).

Yes, the fly is centered up in the tang, and encased in some kind of epoxy/clear material. It is flush with the scales, can't tell its there by holding the knife.

Thumbs up

That is a very classy knife. For $40??? Don't see something that nice very often.
That is a steel. (pun intended)
